Teen Charged with DWI in L.I. Motorcycle Accident

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP)  -- A 19-year-old motorcyclist is charged with driving while intoxicated after his passenger fell off and was hit by a car.

The incident happened early Saturday in Smithtown on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say Steven Schwamb was stopped at a light on the Jericho Turnpike and when the light turned green he accelerated. His passenger, 16-year-old Alyssa Bennett, fell off.

A car struck Bennett as she was lying on the roadway. She was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where she was treated for a broken leg and possible broken ribs. Schwamb was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

The phone number at Schwamb's home was not listed.

every time I see the sport bike kids with their little girlfriends perched way up high on those tiny seat pads I worry about them and wonder if the girls parents have any idea.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why any person would want to ride on the back of a sport bike. They basically have no seat to sit on, no protection from falling off, and look like they are holding on for dear life. One wrong move and they are toast.

So how long do ya think it will be before back seats on "Certain" motorcycles are banned from the OEM.

There was a time it was refered to as a "biotch pad''
Mot that I ever referred to it that way when I used to ride sport bikes back in the early 80's.
I hope she makes a full recovery from this learning event ( accident ) and the rider learns from it as well.
My girlfriend pointed out a chick on the back of some GSXR or something or other and she had on these 6 inch spike heels, tighty white jeans and a Red G-String showin above the top of her hot lookin pants.
Oh did I mention she was like a six 4 and about 5'-0'' tall???
She says  "what happens if she has to put her feet down" ?
I say  "I guess he has to buy her new shoes"??

When I was nineteen, the bike I had had no rear seat so my girlfriend sat on a folded towel.  Ray

Im sorry, I failed to see any mention of a "sport bike".   The kid was drinking..end of story.
I don't see how banning a certain model will eliminate the core of the problem.
It's too easy for youngsters to obtain a bike.  Rider education is minimal at best.
Not like the old days when you started on a 150 Dirt bike and earned your experience through bumps and bruises.
Driving a car requires more training then a bike.

Im glad no one was killed.

My daughters are not permitted to ride on the back of anyone’s bike until I have personally given the driver of the bike an informative talking to. Sure there have been times when they have hated me for it, but they are still both alive and in one piece so I feel that I have done my job.

The "Here's your sign" mentality is not limited to the young or to riders of sportbikes. I've seen some pretty dumb things from all age groups and all types of vehicles ... HD's included.

It's normal (for many) to have a "pack mentality" and be suspicous or to deride anything that does not pass the "sniff" test. We are not quite as "superior" as we like to think we are ... instinctive behavior traits run deep.

EDIT: Sad that stuff like this happens, but that's life. Only the means of the injuries and deaths have changed over time.

Hey, it's not just sport bikes and young people.   I see adults riding on the rear of a lot of chopper types with just a tiny pad or no pad, just the fender. :potstir:

watched a guy rack the throttle and jump a  big old custom chopper on main street to show off,
his wife/GF slid right off the back fender, no seat.

Landed on her butt in the middle of Main street
1000's of people watching

To her credit she jumped up and ran up and got back on
figure scratching his $1000's buck paint job with road sand from
her azz

cops pulled him over for a little discussion..

I hope the young lady fully recovers.

Outside the iron horse one night sitting in the usual traffic jam, a guy on a Fatboy was screwing around with the clutch and throttle and dumped his girlfriend off the back. She wasn't physically hurt but got up off her butt really pissed and slapped the snot out of the dude right in front of everybody. It was hilarious.

I took a pretty fair back thumpin for getting pledge on the back seat once and that was an accident. If I had dumped her I probably would've just ridden on home and packed my sh*t.

Come on how many Hog riders and abate on the big time poker run look at me I am a biker drink and ride?

My wife occasionally rides with me on the back of the old pan with nothing more than a 4"X8" 1" thick piece of foam rubber that she lays on the fender. We're not young, and its just one of the couple of bikes we ride, the others have decent seats. But thats her decision to ride on that bike,in that manner. I'de hate to hear what she would say to anyone that called her dumb about it.

C'mon guys and gals. We all know that there is a difference between plain stupid behavior and doing something that is just a little "strange" for some, but not blatant stupidity or irresponsibility.

And yes, I've seen both HOG and ABATE members drink and do stupid stuff while riding as well. No one is perfect, and that includes me ... sometimes I swear my fence posts are smarter than I am. :>)
