Help Guys

Starting to get a problem on the 90 Heritage i am looking at a repair before to much happens.

Shifting into with the front lever into 1st and then when shifting down the gear lever is springing back fine yet when shifting up  with the rear gear lever, it  doesnt return to its proper position and has to be put in it's proper place before it will shift again.
Clutch is fine and box is good, just this shifting is a worry right now.

Any ideas fella's

Smutley: This is just a shot in the wind since I don't know how many miles on the 90 Heritage (hope it's a zillion and that the bike has served you well). You might try taking the heel/toe shift assembly off its shaft, clean and lub the shaft etc. and see if that helps. I have a riding buddy who had a similar problem with his Heritage (04) after we had been riding for several days in the rain. Seems that water, dirt and whatever had gummed up the works. Good luck. Hope this simple maintainance works for ya.

I agree with IronPig. Take the shaft out of the boss on the inner primary, clean with fine sandpaper or steel wool, relube and re-install. Common problem then and will be in the future since HD has taken the grease fitting off that boss.

IIRC the 90 model should still have a zerk. However if not properly maintained it will get gummed up and do what it's doing. If that's not the problem then the spring on the shifter pawl could be getting weak or broken. I would look at all the outer linkage though first and I bet you'll find the problem is in the shaft as the others have mentioned. Spidey.

I agree with the previous postings... and, remove the shift linkage & lightly oil the pivot balls or heim joints on both ends. While the linkage is off, check the trans shift lever to see if the trans spring is returning to the the proper place, see if its loose & maybe has walked outward the inner primary & is hanging up.

Do you feel a return spring from the lever back to mid possition?
One leg of the spring inside the tranny could be broken, which will not return the lever.

*Evo clueless* here - are there bushings where the splined shaft goes through the outer primary from toe shifter to the linkage lever?

I had some shift slop not too long ago on Gracie (2001FLHR) and a couple of $2 or $3 bushings did the trick.........replaced even the almost new ones just last week when that inner lever gave out.

Have taken the linkage off and seems its out of the box the spring is very very light tension but still has some,

That spring needs to be powerfull enough to snap the linkage, including the lever(s) back to the middle position in order to "grab" the next gear. It is not uncommon for the internal spring to break and then will not return the lever(s).
