Hey, time to refresh a few things on the 2000 FLHRI... fork seals, swingarm bearings, etc... anyone got any good tips/tricks to make changing out the front motor mount a little easier?

TIA,
Garry

Other then the obvious, disconnect the front engine link and loosen the front carrier plate enough to wiggle the mount out but do not take the plate off completely.

Good time to align the bike with the home made tool shown in the tool section.

Need to find someone with a lathe to have a bunch of them made.

All you have to do is loosen the plate that it mounts to the engine with. Unbolt the mount and jack up the motor it will come right out. After you do it one time it gets real fast.

OK I ll ask a dumb question,,, a guy was telling be about a plastic motor mount like the stuff they make roller skate wheels out of??? Who/what is the best kind to replace it with,,OEM or after market???

I would think roller skate wheel material would turn your rubber mount into a ridged mount. But that is just a guess.
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

I believe the roller skate wheel material is urethane.  It is more durable than natural rubber but not as soft.

The urethane mount is good as it doesn't degrade with oil but it's way too stiff. Bike will shake big time.

Watch yourself with the results of a new motor mount replacement, first of all make sure you put it in correctly (and not upside down).  Then don't overtorque it, I've seen a number of posts on this (and the old site) of people who absolutely hate their new HD (Chinese made) motor mounts, say they're too rigid and that the bike vibrates like a banshi when riding.  Also look into J&S Cycle, they have a motor mount that still employs the center metal bushing inside the mount itself, absent the new HD mounts (however present on original mounts).  Again from what I've experienced, don't over torque and there's also a break in period, a new mount will feel rougher, and you'll swear you wished you'd never changed the damned thing, but it'll slowly break in....  Again, don't install it upside down or you'll get more experience doing it again.

I have heard there is a BUELL mount that is the same as the original HD one. No details.

YA LET HIPPO DO IT AND DRINK BEER DONT GET ANY EASIER THAN THAT
HAVE A GOOD TIME ITS LATER THAN YOU THINK

The new mount you purchase from HD is the 79D, I have one and I took it back off, shook like no tomorrow, so I put my old one back on and all was good, I also tried a DragSpecialities one and its ok at idle but when you start to take off you better hold on  :crook:, didn't use it either, I would look into the mount that comp sells I believe, it called velva-ride.

Sooo lets do a poll,   the new motor 79D mount or the Buell mount.
How many people that didn't like the 79D actually torqued it to specs?

truck

I torqued mine to specs. and no complaints.

metaliser

I torqued mine to specs and it sucked, now I'm comparing to the stock 06 one which was great, the reason I wanted to swap was my fairing mount's broke at the corners which I fixed my self and the rubber on the bottom of the mount had broke lose from the metal, anyway I put it back on and it's smooth as silk and my handle bar doesn't vibrate like a jack hammer.

Ya I agree with metaliser the NEW mount they sell (Harley's 3rd design) are really rough...vibrates all thru my a$$. Pretty bad design if you ask me. If there is a substitute for it I surley would consider it. 02 FLHRCI with 50,000 miles.

I put the new one on my 95 RK and after about 400 miles it was just fine.

classic  metaliser   How long did you wait (milage) before changing new mounts back
to the old ones?
the reason I ask is its a pain to do mine because of the oil cooler and  I ether going to the 79D or the Buell
