I took CraigArizona's advice and used low 87 octane gas.  I always change
the oil and change plugs before taking the emissions test.
Bike is 02 Heritage, motor is 95", Andrews 37g cams, head work, and SERT dyno
tuned all done by Nick Trask at Trask Performance here in Phoenix. This was my
4th emissions test since doing the motor work, and the bike has always barely
passed.  This time with using the lower octane gas, it passed with flying colors.
I have the old test results, and this time the numbers are so much better I can't
believe it!  Don't know how accurate these machines are, but I'll take it!
Thanks Craig! :teeth:

If your on the edge of passing Google acetone emissions testing and see what pops up.
Idiots are fun, no wonder every village wants one.

Glad to hear it 176.  I think there is some variance in the testing equipment too.  I've gone from one year to the next with making no changes and seen the bike test a bit dirty one year, then very clean the next.

I really wish they would dump the emissions testing.  It's a pain in the backside.  I haven't even bothered to ride my newer FXDWG since the registration expired in 2008.  I'm not motivated enough to get it emission tested anymore.  I'll keep riding the antique since it is exempt from testing.

I read to use acetone it burns fast and clean.  You use 2 ounces to 5 gallons or 2 ounces to 10 gallons.Search the intetnet for emission testing motorcycles with acetone. You will find it somewhere. Do not get it on your paint. I just got threw reading about acetone for motorcycles. You add 1 to 1 1/2 oz. to 5 gallons of gas.

Will the acetone damage the lining in the tank?
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

Proabably, depending upon the percentage.

Here in Az. we use denatured alcohol to help pass emissions.
I always throw around 8oz's in the tank as well to help pass.
Makes a big difference and does not hurt the tank lining.
I also use it in my old truck, but there I put a quart in.

acetone is the reducer if you want to thin tank liner when you line the tank but in that quanity and cured tank liner I doubt any damage would occure.

I read to use acetone it burns fast and clean. Riders in calif. is doing that.
I don't know why they'd be doing that since we don't have emission testing of bikes in CA.

That's right. In addition, acetone is priced anywhere from $15.95 a gallon (Lowes) to $18.95 a gallon (Ace, Home Depot). It's ridiculously expensive,

Hi Guys. i am moving to Az in July from Mass. i did not know Az had emmissions testing in AZ for bikes. Is there a cut off date where testing is not required? how often is it done? What is involved. Thanks Steve.

Maru

Does Arizona still do emission testing for motorcycles. I did some research and it said testing in Phoenix metro only and that it may no longer be in affect. Is Cave Creek included in the tested areas and if so is the testing program still in operation? thanks Steve

Here's one of the articles on Acetone.. I wonder how much of an improvement a couple of Oz's really make? I know everything is relative like driving habits, probably the climate and elevation of where you live also but on an average lets say you have a 20 gallon tank and you pour in 2 -2.5 oz, would you get 1-3%, 4-7% more??

Hey Frisco,

Don't talk too loudly about no M/C emissions testing here in California. If it is up to those morons we have in Sacramento, we would already have it on the newer bikes. Fortunately, so far, those with saner heads have prevailed. Let's hope that it stay that way.

I recall when the helmet law finally passed in CA. The jackass who got it passed lied through his teeth about the statistics and the bragged about it. I had been beaten down several times but this guy finally got it thorough by lying and he was proud of it !!

You're talkng about that jerk, Dick Floyd. After he convinced the legislature to pass the helmet law with some odd statistics, he later lost election to another term.

About 15 years ago, I was at an ABATE gathering to fight the helmet law after it passed. I happened to be standing near the sidewalk at the Sate Capitol with a couple of the ABATE leaders when Dick Floyd came by and stopped his car. He leaned out and gave us a one-finger salute. I'm sorry I didn't have my camera with me.

Rather than pass legislation that was meaningful, he took a personal dislike to motorcycles and bikers in general and did us all some dirt. I would wear a helmet anyway, but I don't think that the government should tell me what to wear.

Anyway, he did his dirty work and moved on and now riders are stuck with the helmet law.

As mentioned here, there was some talk of doing testing on motorcycles here but it didn't make it into law....no doubt the "Greenies" will try it again some day. It's mainly to collect money more than pollution since bikes are not much of a problem.

I recall a big anti-helmet-law party up along Hwy 1 in a sand-pit or something.  Fun times.  I don't know if that was before the law passed or after.  Didn't remember the jackass but the name Dick Floyd does ring some bells...

Back on topic... Yes arizona does still do emission testing in the phoenix metro area (maracopa county and parts of pinal county).

I seem to recall about a year ago, they were gonna do away with it here in AZ. What ever happened on that?

Waiting for EPA approval for plan to get rid of motorcycle testing.

Maru

How likely is epa approval? How often is it done? Where is the testing? Thanks Steve

CraigArizona85248

I'm have high hopes the EPA will approve the plan. Testing is required every year for bikes over 5 years old. There are testing stations located all over the phoenix area. Usually dont have to go farther then 5 or 6 miles, depending o where you live.

It's surprising that Arizona is testing when California isn't. You would think that California would lead the nations in such activity....wouldn't you?

176

When I lived in Ca. Back in the early 90's, the emissions testing was a joke. It was done at
Most corner gas stations with a sign out front pass or don't pay. Guess what, my junker back then always passed, just left it there for a half day and picked it up with a passing certificate.
Never asked any questions just laughed as I was pulling out of there  don't know how they do it now, but back then it was easy.
