Will it looks like i am gonna have to spurge for a High torque starter. I have tried everything else that i can think of and still no joy. It sounds kinda wierd, but it started fine now for several months and now when it sets over night i have to use the charger and jumper cables on the truck to get it to turn over fast enough to start.  Once started it does fine until it sets for 7 or 8 hours. At first i thought battery but i put a known good high amp battery and it does the same thing. The only thing i can think of is a high torque starter. You guys think of anything else?

even with your compression releases it starts hard?

what pinion ring gear ratio are you running?  alot more torque avalible form the 9t 66t set up

BONERACIN

With compression releases pushed in, and i even hold the rear down. I already have the 9/66 Primo set up

The funny thing is, it has been starting fine for about 1000 mile now. Then it progressivley got harder to start after it had been setting for a long period of time, over 5 hours.

Bone, how's your cables? The Yooper type make a big difference IMO.

Sounds like your jhaving Lifter bleed down issues?  have you got limiters installled?

BONERACIN

No limiters installed. Can you ellaborate on the bleed down issue. Could i check this by letting it set over night and check preload on my pushrods?

Or a battery that is gettin' old.  Max

I tried a known good battery with the same results. I was hoping it was that easy. This lifter bleed down has got me to thinking. I am just grasping at straws. :nix:

If it worked before, and not now, check the easy things first.......
yes, cables, good ground, battery, THEN address the starter.
I have had better luck using a good battery then using a hi torque starter, there were always clearance issues with them.

FWIW, We have gone through all the aftermarket, high output, high dollar starters over the recent years, only to come back to the stocker. If everything else is in good order and the compression releases are in proper working order, there is little or no problem with the stock starter.

After going through all the high amp starters it has become apparent (to us) the additional draw on the battery hurts the charge state and will discharge rapidly killing any hope of restarting.
Just my experience,

I'm running the same cam with higher compression. Stock starter. Change your cables to welding grade. Use good lugs.

:agree:

Good place to start, sometimes the cables "look" fine, but, have high resistance due to poor connections inside the insulation.
Ran into this issue at work for years, it will drive you nuts!

Good to keep an eye on the cable ends which will usually show signs of corrosion. Guaranteed to go bad (too much internal resistance) as far away as possible, on the most important ride of the year, right in front of your friend. :embarrassed:

I got a motor where a stock starter wouldn't even get me out of the driveway (for me it's up hill..   :emsad: ).. Max

BONERACIN

How do you check for lifter bleed down?

Max,
How's that reverse kit working for you?  :nix: You are only supposed to use the starter for starting the engine not backing out of the driveway.

Doesnt look like any one else agrees on lifter issue,  may be we are just grasping straws, it was just a idea,
not the easiest part to play with either,    what preload are they set at?  you could try  sinking plunger another  .50 if you are at .100 down,    you havnt changed oils  ie brands or velcitys latley>?

pwmorris

"can you think of anything else?"
Yup, Set your ignition to fire after a couple revolutions, S&S EZ start cams or two batteries-

What great idea to bring to Bib Twins. Gotta wonder why the MOCO didn't do it first. After all it has been a proven method for a long time. Can you say V-rod?

Problem solved, #2 welding lead works wonders. Thanks for all the help.
