Well I added a quart of oil to see if it would run, not happy with my findings so far, fearing the worst [ crank  / oil pump damage]   I fired it up and let it idle  until warm , discovered excessive vibration in engine transfering all the way through the frame, you can feel it in the seat.  As the engine  warmed up it started seeping oil through the throttle body [aircleaner removed].  Bike revs slow , sounds very strange, and vibrates like hell, yet no weird clanking or metalic noises to speak of and no smoke coming out the exhaust.   Let me know if this helps with  any other possibilities.  continuation  of previous post last week , Thanks for all your input

There's one way to know for sure....start ripping it apart.  Take pics of your findings as I would be interested to see the damage.  I think you're on track to look at the crank/pump.

Have you pulled the drain plug on the bottom of the cases? Measure how much comes out.

well you know it was a scavenge side problem on the pump to puke that much oil.  with vibration you feel that most likely eliminates the "luckier" causes and heads you in the direction of your crank scisssored and messed up the pump.  just pull the cover off and check...you will know right away.

I believe that you called this one. Yes, it sounds like it's sumping.

You know, I really don't like the idea of an oil pump mounted on the timing side of the crank like that. It would have been a better design if it were gear driven so that it would be isolated from damage even if the crank did slip. The early engines were OK in that regard. The oil pumps weren't high volume on Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads and Evos but they worked.

They could have simply designed them with larger volume and pressure for the 88 on up engines. I mean, if the crank slipped, you could diagnose the problem and you'd still have to pull the engine down to change or repair the crank but you probably wouldn't grenade the rest of the engine due to oil pump failure.

More "progress". LOL.

What happens if the runout causes the gear drive to the pump to fail?  Same as now?  Plus that's more noise.  Gotta keep mechanical noise in check if you want to produce air-cooled bikes with fair-enough exhaust sound.  These pumps are pretty quiet, usually.

I had Model WLA's, Model K's, Knuckleheads, Panheads and Evolutions and the only problem I ever had with one of the old style gear driven oil pumps was one time I myself left a key out of the pump shaft on my Shovelheadand the red light wouldn't go out. I caught it before I ever took a ride. No harm, no fault.

In all of the many miles I rode those things I never had one break on the road. Other things, sure, but not the oil pump.

If the crank scissored and got the pump, wouldn't there be an oil pressure problem; as in none?

Most likely, unless the scavenge gerotor broke into chunks and then it would sump for a bit before it quit permanently. Just a guess on my part.

After adding a quart of oil and starting engine, oil light came on and remained on for a minute. Pulled crankcase drainplug and over 3 quarts of oil drained out. (sumping) scavenging side oil pump evidently! Pulled camcover and found remnants of hard rubber orings suspected. Also found metallic matter in oil filter.  :emsad: not looking good at this point. Will be purchasing gear puller to continue with the disassembly.

Not needed
1/4" X 20 bolts in the gears get them off, assuming you have gear drive.

Thanks Don, a little rusty on the wrenching  after two years , since the last time I had her down
