Tenting or getting a room

Okay, since the descussion got out of control for the one trailering post. How many are Sally's and get a room vs camp in a tent?

Used to tent, but got married and the wif thinks roughin it is 6 motel and b & w tv. Got a 74' Nomad and roll the bike in the bed of the truck. Opinions will be as wide as the world of sports so grab yer pop corn and enjoy the show. What ever trips my trigger at the time, and times change.------RJ

Ah, not this carp again.  You guys really need to move to warmer climates somewhere.  Who cares if ya use a hotel/motel/campground/open patch of earth.

Now, if ya want to talk which hotel you like to use, I prefer Holiday Inns.  KOA for campgrounds, as they are almost always clean and friendly.  But, if I have a planned route and can look up a mom and pop campground, I use those too.

As for camp gear, I am older now and need a Thermarest inflatable pad to rest my weary bones.  Sleeping on only ground and I wake too sore to ride much the next day.

Just my .02, and trying to keep this one from going south.  But, it will anyway.  Now, where is that bike trailer, and what oil should I use to lube the hitch with?......

Yeah, but I have run into issues with KOA's saying no motorcycles when I showed up after having made an online reservation. They ain't all so friendly.

i will go either way.

i will admit i like rooms better than camping,i have had my share of sleeping on the ground and paid my dues.

if i take off knowing me and the wife are going to spending at least 1 night on the ground i will pack our scooters down with a tent and single air mattresses.air pump that runs off of my scooter battery and we are all set for a decent sleep,as far as spending 3-4 nights in a tent?im out  i feel like no matter what you stay in the main thing is to have as much fun as time alows,Travis

I used to love to camp but my back is so bad that after a 500-600 mile day I am looking for a bed and hot shower to ease the pain. I don't think anyone will look any differently at anyone else for their lodging preferences and if they do then Fluck 'em and feed 'em fish heads. That's why I like to ride with the people I ride with. No judgemental people. Spidey.

Tsani, sorry to hear that!  I have never been turned away on the bike.  But, if I were I would complain to the national KOA office.  Unless the individual KOA campground states no motorcycles, then they must allow them. A complaint to the national office would be welcomed, as KOA says they do not discriminate.  At least there communciations to me all state that.

The biggest problem I have run across is that some campgrounds allow only RVs and camper trailers--no tents.  I that case, I have to keep looking, but its perfectly fine if they dont allow tent camping.

Truth be told though, I prefer those camper cabins at KOA and similar campgrounds.  I pack my tent just in case tho.

I try and mouch off some of the people here on HTT   I plan a trip, advertise it here and then stop and visit with who sends back a friendly reply. Stay a night, See the town, Have the host's cat pee on your bedroll (Spidey knows) and down the road to the next stopover. A great way to see the country and meet some of the good people here. Sometimes they even spring for the drinks. If nobody offers a floor then it's a KOA or even a national forest with free camping.

Camping doesnt do much me for any more, but you do meet some fun folks when you do.

There too many cheep roadside motels that work just fine ..  I usually look for other bikes parked cuz you know there will be a party that evening.

Hot shower and comfortable bed beats camping any day.

For me it's Mooch or Motel.  I have travelled for 7 weeks, 10,000 miles on one trip and stayed in a motel twice, mooched the rest of time.

since my business requires me to use a trailer for weekend business I have no problem using it for a rally (cargo w/ quarters in the front). I have plenty of tent time when I go hunting in the West. Plus the wife doesn't like tenting when we have the T. HMMM T for Tent or T for Trailer. Now Iam corNfused!

Motel Hotel when the Bride is along, dirt when with my Bud's. I have a good eye for chicken coops, turkey shoot hooches, car ports behind bars and the like. Nothing like a fall evening camp fire near the creek in the National or State Forest of your choosing. Bottle O Crown fer sippin, big steak, can o taters, fer eatin, Pal er 2 for tellin stories.

54 this year and looking forward to as many more of those trips as I can get.

Got one o those jell matts that works pretty good for the ol bones.

Something about an E-Glide parked next to a tent, that turns me on  But mostly we camp to save money. The more money I save, the more places, I can go see and do. Pulling a trailer behind my "old man's" bike with our camping gear {cooler for beer and my coffee pot} air mattress plus our Cold Weather gear in it. Makes touring more fun and enjoyable. If I didn't have to go to work or deal with my "normal responsibilities" of day to day...I could STAY gone.

If I go by myself I will pack a tent, but Annie don't let me out of her sight that often! She likes the motel room, but I gotta give the girl credit, we have stayed in some motels that made me cringe when I opened the door, and never a complaint out of her!

I grew up in Colorado and Camping, backpacking etc.. was a big part of my life.  Joined the Army and the need to rough it outdoors was fullfilled for over 22 years 

Actually have been thinking of two week road trip with no real plan with a crew that works for me.  Camping may be an option.

I might take an "eyeball rest" on a concrete picnic table with my long rider rolled up under my neck (for an hour or 2) - other than that "camping" = no room service

I get a little nervous riding southwest and the rumor that snakes like to crawl into the sleeping bag for warmth, but that's what them concrete tables at the roadside rests are for, right? Nothing like a frontage road, stand of trees, a stogie, and a 24oz can of beer before sleeping like a baby.

I've evolved. Spent younger years sleepin' on the ground handcuffed to the bike. Sometimes tent, sometimes no tent, but always handcuffs. Damn good peace of mind there.

Grew up, grew old, grew soft, grew some damn thing, and went to motels. Never looked back. If I gotta wake up crippled to be a "real" biker, screw it. Call me Sally, Suzie, or Sadie for all I care. I did my time.

I recently inherited a damned nice motorhome. We took it on our first trip early last month, and things are definitely going to change again. With the RV, we can escape out of here (Wisconsin) for a week or two at a time once or twice each winter, and I can sleep in my own bed and poop in my own toilet. I'm all for it. We'll still do the OFOPOS meet in the summers, and the small fall one we've done the last coupla years, but that'll be it. There's plenty of fine riding right here in my own backyard to keep me occupied all summer. We'll save our other trips for the winter, which will hopefully save us some sanity.

Cedars.  Going to EKIII is like going to any other IRL.  Wherever you're at you're gonna miss something.  Last year the rain drove a couple of us from the camp with intentions of returning later.  We had a beer on the motel porch and it progressed from there.  We had a dry spot and likker, the crowd (the non-ground dwelling part of it) followed.
