Happened   to my friend on a trip way up in Canada. Ugly! Had to remove fairing and radio [flhtc] and remove whole ignition switch. Hot wired to start. I will never use a fork lock again.

That's the thing tbird, the damn things don't give you any indication there's a problem until they catch you out well and truly.

Nah, it does probably works to that extent ... but, like other say, the way the pros lift Harleys is with four guys and two scaffolding poles front and rear, so it does not matter ... then the bike is stripped to pieces before the truck has even stopped.

I am guessing opportunistic hot wire artists will choose which ever model has an exposed ignition switch. Do they still exist?

Here's a horror question to ask. Do people remember when some low lives worked out that all it took to open a Kryptonite lock was a Bic Biro pen and a lighter? Does the same technique work on H-D barrel lock?

I'm just glad that this fork lock problem does not arise whilst your riding the bike ... I've tried riding off without unlocking once in my life. Not a lesson you forget.

FYI, you can stop dead in such a circumstance, thereby limited damage to the vehicle as it falls, but remember all the momentum is then transferred to the only easily movable item ... you. No, you cannot ride around in circles.

No, but do know you don't leave a drive shaft standing in the corner next to the a bike with a Kryptonite on it. The thieves used it to snap the loop on one of those on my friends bike.

Sorry to hear that. Yes, it's a good lesson to look around your garage and ask yourself what some improvising low life will pick and choose to rip off your bike.

The old Kryptonites used to have barrel keys just like most H-D. They took the plastic outer of the Biro pen, half melted it to stick into the lock, let it set and just turned it.

Then some student put a video of how on Youtube ...

Actually, in all fairness, I think it was some kind of campaign/public awareness thing to get Kryptonite to admit up the problem. They did change the design, the thieves kept getting better. I don't know who is winning the war with what weapons right now.

I always favored the idea of a large, sharp and barbed harpoon spike mounted in the middle the saddle which triggered if the bike was ridden off without a safe key being put in place by the legitimate owner.

If anyone knows how to make one, please PM me.
