THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!!!! Due to a recent fire, I am in need of a complete front end of some kind for a 1990 Electra Glide. The gas tank ,front fender, complete wiring system---actually the complete front end is toast!! I really don't care if I have to turn it into a Road King front end or not. The motor and tranny and all are fine.  Anyway....... what years and what models do you guys suggest for me? I thank you all in advance for your answers and support.

So sorry to hear you have to go thru all that crap.

If the frame and triple clamps are good ( assume you'll dissasemble and check, replace, repack the neck bearings)  then the forks, front wheel and front fender from any 1984 to 2008 can bolt up.

The speedo drive would be an issue so if your wheel is good, I'd just replace the bearings in it and get a new speedo drive and use that set up. Also would need to address the brake calipers and master cylinder, depending on the year fork legs you would use. Getting brake lines is easy.

Getting the inner fairing and the outer fairing for that year, plus all the wiring would be a total bitch.  I'd use the inner fairing and outer fairing from a 97 to 08 glide, get the gauges you want, grab a factory manual and search, talk , beg , borrow and steal putting a wiring harness together.   Getting a wirigin harness from a carbed twin cam and retro fitting it , might be a cost effective way to go.

If the fire was that bad then for sure your calipers and lines are toast and possibly the master cylinder also. As 89flht already pointed out, any 1984 and later for tubes will work. The only difference between them is length. It would be much cheaper for you to just redo it with the 2000 and later stuff. Aftermarket fork tube assemblies will run about $125 plus shipping for a pair. Lower fork legs (sliders) about $20 plus shipping. Dealer take-off calipers should be about $125 for a pair. Like new '96 and later style handlebar controls about $40 to $50 without buttons. Prewired buttons will hit you another $50. Use braided lines with AN-3 ends. This is way cheaper than replacing with old stuff and when you're done you will have a new late style front end which may help take some of the sting out of your mishap. Any front FLH fender from shovelhead on up will work.

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post. YOu will need to get a 1" axle but you already mention needing a new wheel so get a 2000 and later front wheel. You can find 'em on ebay all the time with the stock rotors still on 'em.

Thanks guys, Wow!! The information from you guys is impressive. Actually believe it or not, my front tire and rim, even rotors seem to be fine. Brake lines and master cylinder gone. I will find out more as I go along. Please pass on any other advice that you guys have. Thanks, Dan

Dan,

is this the same bike you just did the trans work on?  Bummer either way though.  Let me know is you have specific parts needs.  I may have some take off stuff, calipers, rotors, etc.

Yes Mark, I had it in the garage that is attached to the house. At 9:00 3/7 smoke detectors blasted and it was my Harley burning, almost burned my house down. That was three weeks ago and now everything is back to normal at my house except my bike. I will try to fix her back up. The real kick in the nads is that I had my tag and insurance taken off for the winter and my insurance says that my Harley wasn't covered! So I will have to take the expense on the chin.Thank you for your info about the parts. I am trying to decide which way to go. Think I will go with the 2000 up front end replacement buying parts wherever I can.  Thanks for the concern and support. Dan

Dan,

Try your homeowner's insurance?  It was in the home, may be covered that way????

Mark, I have talked to them. They said "if it were a lawnmower or something used around the property yes,but a motor vehicle no". My advice to everyone is to keep your insurance all year so as to avoid what I am going through. Ironic but this is the first year in the last ten that I have canceled it over the winter. Thanks, Dan

Good to know.  I buy an older bike now and then to fix, play with and sell (or keep).  In the "fix and play" stages I have never insured them thinking the homeowners would cover it if anything happened.  Now I know........
