Tail Light/ Rear Fender help

I have a 96 Sportster and bought a rear fender from a 2000. Thinking they where the same. But the area where the tail light housing bolts up are different. Now I'm think they must have changed the tail light housing at some time between the years. Has anyone ever worked threw this and if so how did you? Is there a bracket kit or does the tail light housing have to be changed to a newer style?

according to my '00 parts book, the rear fenders on sporty's were changed in '99.  Looks like all the part numbers in the tail light area are -99, so my guess would be that you would have to buy the newer assembly if you want to use that fender.

Thanks Mayor, I have been looking around on ebay and I think your right they changed the tail light mounting int 99. The 99 and newer fenders have a big square hole for the tail light assembly and the older ones have two finger knuckle looking brackets that the assembly bolts to. I guess I need a newer style light assembly or...MAYBE THEY SELL A MOUNTING KIT for the older light for the newer fenders ??
