After hearing a  friend of a friend does this thought I'd test it.
He claims to be running ear buds off his speakers inside the
batwing. Says he's been doing it for years. I got some old
buds and a extended female jack. Cut one end, stripped the
two power wires and put one on each positive side of the
speakers. The ground to one speaker negative. Works.
Very low volume reuired. Just wondering how long it could
last before blowing the buds.

Personally, I'm willing to give up some sound quality out of the radio to be sure I still hear stuff like sirens, horns, tires of the car sliding up on me, girls yelling they want a ride (in my dreams), and all the other "sounds" that come with being as safe as you can in a world where everyone is out to run over your ass.

Wideboy, I have a 00' FLHTC with the jack in the radio. I plug my mp3 player into it. My daughter plugged her buds into it also and said it works great. I guess it's a bi-directional jack. Why did you have to cut the plug on the buds and hard wire them to the speakers? I would assume if you wired the male jack to them and plugged in that they would handle the voltage well. I don't know where you live but in IL, you can't ride with buds in.

I hear ya, this would only be an alternative. Sometimes on the freeway,
sometimes one ear. There's occasions when I have trouble hearing, and
maybe to block out the passenger :gob: (I did not say that :teeth:)

I don't have a input on my stereo. I cut the end off the female extension,
then plugged the buds in to that. Been told by some it wouldn't work. It
appears it does, just don't know for how long. I'm in Ohio, don't know if
it's legal here or not. Wouldn't be using them often. Haven't set it up yet
just tested it on a friends while doing a handlebar swap.

I attached the wires for a stereo plug to my HK radio and ran a connector to the back of the tank.  It can be done.  Pin info is in the serice manual, easy to figure out.

I run custom molded plugs, and wear a full face.  Never turn it very loud, as I want to hear whats going on around me too.  Dont even use the radio/music much.....just on longer open road rides, never in town.

I need the plugs to save what little hearing I have left.  Wouldnt think of riding without plugs and full face, or at least a 3/4 helmet (which I havent used in years).

I ran a 3.5mm jack off the RCA output on the Sony (Biketronics) stereo.  Then use noise canceling Shure EC2 headphones.  Kills all wind noise.  Volume was too low even turned all up since I am supposing the output RCA was to feed an amp?  Anyway, found an in line booster / modulator and now have a usable set up.  Ran the plug in end under the tank and it exits at the nose of the seat.  Don't use in high concentration areas, but nice for cruising and ears don't ring from wind noise after long days.  Use foam ear plugs anyway, so I figure I did not give up much hearing anyway.  And I ride vary alert anyway, always scanning front, back and sides.

Bought my first custom molded plugs a month ago.  A set with speakers, a set without.  What took me so long!?!  It's worth the extra $.  A perfect fit, they don't dislodge or fall out, can still hear the necessary stuff.

Yeah got a pair of the molded plugs work great on long rides
or with the loud bassani's on the heritage.

Actually hear better, less wind and mechanical and tire noise
gets through...

Last year after a long tour to the Texas Hill Country, during which I couldn't hear my stereo over the road and wind noise at the sustained 80+mph speeds, I bought a nice set of sound isolating ear buds that were recommended on another bike forum by riders who had experience with them. The next few long trips I took where high speed runs were expected, I used the buds plugged into my Mp3 player.  I know it's illegal in MN and I don't care...because I now know that I can hear the traffic around me and the sounds my bike makes MUCH better with the ear buds in.  They cancel out the wind noise and allow me to run my music at much lower volume levels so I can hear things around me.  Another nice benefit is reduced fatigue.  I'd get a headache at times trying to hear my stereo on the roadglide during that trip to Texas.

I leave for a trip to California next week...6000+ miles in 14 days...and you can bet I'll be jamming through the ear buds and not the stereo for any riding done over 70mph from now on. :smiled:
There's nothing better than riding with friends!

I purchased a set of these, they work very well even at highway speeds

Not the best I am sure but the best I have found for the money.

The jack connection was NG for me It was 2.5 mm not 3.5 as needed for my mp3 player so I purchased a good set of ear bud head phones. I basically purchased these for the soft silicone ear buds.........

Here is a link to the ear buds

http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/17460.htm

they use a stepped soft silicone bud, the next link is for the brand of ear phones I used ( good quality for the price) and simply put the soft silicone bud on the better ear bud head phones.

The link contains the whole listing of products but the ones in the $24-$40 range are very good especially ones with volume control biult in.
