99 xlh 1200 after riding 50 miles will start cutting out and backfireing then dies.

mayor

can you give more info?  how many times has this happened?  just once? more than once? after changes? after full moon?  :teeth:

my first guess would be nose-cone ignition module or coil....but need more info.
warning, this poster suffers from bizarre delusions

cruiserdl

it has happened 2 times.the first time after 100 milesand the second time 50 miles. thinking module but would like to be sure.

I agree also, the module or coil, but coils don't usually go south.
Sounds like its heat related and your loosing fire.
As Mayor said, need more info......was the outside temp hotter on the day you rode 50 miles and it acted up?
Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

cruiserdl

the 100 mile ride was 10 degrees warmer than 50 mile. took 2 40 mile runs between the other two and it ran like a new one .
the bike has 23,000 miles on it and has always been taken very good care of.

Panzer

Does the bike start right up after it dies or does it need a rest?
If so, for how long?
All lights functional when it dies or does everything shut down?
Need more input from you for others to diagnose your problem.
Just asking.

lights are good .usually starts but misses and backfires real bad .next day will start and run fine.

gotta hate these niggly intermittent problems!
really hard to say, but my first suspect would be a nose cone sensor.
check the little earth wire for the ignition module under the triangular cover - if that's all rusty can cause some funny symptoms. (i guess the 5 speeds still have that earth wire...)
I agree with Panzer - coil problems seem to me to be rarer than nose cone sensor or ignition module failures.
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a roll of Duck tape then you're in trouble
