I know this is a sacrilege, but I'd like to dull the mirror finish from my chrome steering hub nut cover. The reflection from the sun blinds me when the sun is overhead. I will either remove it completely or find a way to dull the finish.

Get a Scotchbrite scrub pad intended for scrubbing pans in the kitchen. They are usually available in the kitchen wares area of your supermarket. work the cover over good with it and that should give it a "Brushed" look.

Hope this helps.

 but what now for the rest of the chrome?

Good question. The only other problem is the console. It's not as bad as the steering nut cover was, but I'm thinking about getting it powder coated, maybe black or red to match the bike.

Ride the bike for 30+ years, the chrome on my shovelhead is getting dull.
