I spent a lot of years "hating every cop that ever lived." Then, I married a Correctional Officer and got to know quite a few cops on a personal level. They really are just like everyone else. Some are dicks, some aren't. Some get a little power and get on a power-trip, some don't. Some just naturally treat others with respect, some don't. You can say all of the above about the members of any profession. Although I must say, my many years of "cop hatred" have me trained to be very wary of the folks in blue until proven otherwise. Better safe than sorry.

Coincidentally, some of them have said that getting to know me has changed their view of "bikers," or at least softened it up some.

Never follow the Hippo into the water.

My son is a CHP officer, now a Sergeant. He was raised to be honest and straight. If you met him, and many, many others in law enforcement like him, you might change your opinion.

My take on this topic is, if you don't like cops, next time you have a really big problem, call a crook.  :pop:

 Same here. My son is an LAPD. I asked about forced ticketing and he told me no way. They are told that writing 1 ticket a day shouldn't be too hard to do since he is in a patrol car all day anyway taking care of real trouble.

You might as well hate 'em all, we are obviously all alike in every respect.

No different than the attitude that everyone is a criminal waiting to be caught. Attitudes go both ways. Give me respect, treat me in a courteous manner and you receive the same, no matter who you are. It would also help if the LEO's would start obeying the same laws as we citizens. It goes both ways.

Change my opinion? How? I stated pretty clearly that I believe some are dicks, some aren't. If you think that I (or anybody else) should automatically believe that all cops are wonderful because you say your kid is a good one, you're delusional. It's exactly that "Holier Than Thou" attitude that many of the general public can't stand.

It's a job. That's all. He signed up for it. Nobody forced him. The job pays "x" salary, with "y" benefits, and that is exactly what your kid is entitled to. Nothing more, nothing less. If he doesn't like it, perhaps he should change professions.

messed up

It's sad the way the law treats citizens today versus 25 years ago "99% of bikers are law abiding citizens". I try to stay out of states that have mandatory helmet laws, they don't need my business

I don't think most cops have that attitude at all.  I know I don't.  And I do obey the laws, thank you very much.

Man, some of you guys must look like a Pagan or Hells Angel looking for trouble. So far I have never gotten a ticket from any police when riding a bike and that goes back many years and quite a few stops. Of course I never try to pi$$ them off and try to be polite and give them respect. In the past I have ridden dirt bikes with some police, bought guns from police, hung out with some detectives and other police and now ride with my friend, a correctional officier, and some of his police buddys. I personally can't say anything bad about the officers that I have met. Maybe I just look to pathetic to give a ticket to. O yes, I always wear a helmet and keep the bike noise down - I don't like attention.

I was a a nyc cop for 20 years.I spent a good deal of that time working plainclothes anti crime details. In 1994 the "compstat" (google it for further explanation) system was implemented. It worked well for the first few years. It is now completely perverted.Police dept's are now run like businessess.People don't count, only stats. If x number of tickets are written in 2009,then a certain increased "goal"is set for the next year.Same with arrests.I was at a meeting and i asked a high ranking member how arrests could be higher when crime is lower.A "Potty mouth"storm erupted and he could give no legitimate answer, only berate me! I retired 2 weeks later.Join your local/state or whatever mrf you see fit.The yearly dues ain't that much when you look at the big pcture. As far as showing up to rallies, that's great, but those politicians need to be talked to /written to,and e mailed to let them know we're pissed.November is closer than you think.later,b.

Let me get this straight. I say some cops are good, some cops are bad, just like members of any profession. You say your kid is a good cop, so I should change my opinion. I disagree, and decide to stay with my original opinion, which I thought was pretty moderate and level-headed. Now I have a chip on my shoulder about cops? Please explain to me how this works.

You must be the ONE I've never met, because the only time I've EVER seen a cop doing the speed limit is when he's riding my ass. And just for the record, I was brought up right, I'm always polite and respectful to the popo.

i live in same town as black and the local cops set up road blocks every week ,and they had 2 weekends where they set up at walmart where you can bring your bike in and they would tell you what is wrong with your bike with no tickets ,at least on that day ,the problem being there is atleast 6 offiers and the investigator who have bikes that will not pass their own testing ,short pipes apes that are way above shoulders no front brakes all kinds of stuff including skidlid helmets ,and they are the first ones to bust someones balls ,they came to a local bike shop and wanted them to supply a illegal bike as they the herkimer cops called it so they could use as example ,and when asked why they did not just use one of their officers bike for an example the answer was ,we can't do that it would not look good for the department .they party and what not with no reparcusions and people wonder why guys are pissed at cops ,we have feds cops and correctional officer victory motorcycle club  members that party, ride like idiots and get free pass as well and would arrest you in a second when on duty ,seen the show ,i will see you on saturday black good luck with ticket .later pete

Kind of difficult to "go to court" when you live hundreds of miles away.

Of course, cops know this, which is why they target out-of-state drivers (or, are directed to by their superiors at the behest of the politicos who appoint their superiors)

I'm in NY as I type this (not on the bike though) and I make sure I keep my vehicle exactly at the speed limit and my seatbelts on, precisely for the reason in the above sentence.

Sooo.. I just saw on the today show another instance of our police protection in practice, 19 yr old girl in Wa. being punched in the face for not welcoming the J-walking ticket officer friendly gave her.
lemme see here? She will get 15 min. of fame and a zillion dollars AFTER the City spends two zillion to prove the cop was in mortal danger fearing for his life.
The police union will get the cop a zillion dollars for wrongfull termination because he was vetted by the police shrink prior to being turned loose to fulfill his power fantasies and due to the stress involved in getting caught he will get a disability retirement totaling more than his wages.
Oh yeah officer friendly will be suspended with pay during all the "proceedings". ODD in construction we called time off with pay...VACATION.

MrClean

It is how bad things start, with incorrect information.  The girl that was punched in the face was 17 yrs old. Officer Ian P. Walsh is seen punching the girl in the face after she tries to intervene in the arrest of a 19-year-old friend.  If the 17 yr old would have stayed out of the officers way and let him do his thing, then she would not have been hit.  She was not hit by officer friendly for jay walking.  That punch stopped the 17 yr old from getting in the officers face and allowed him to fight with the 19 yr old.  Many members here when faced with a two on one situation would draw there gun and just shoot.

Here is the story.

These are the facts according to my opinions.

I try to keep an open mind and judge people on a one on one basis. Are mistakes made? Yes, by both sides. Replies 45 and 46 are a good reason why I try to be fair about it. That being said, I take LEO's with a grain of salt and it's their own fault as far as I am concerned. Yes, there are good LEO's out there and I would hope they are the majority. But until they start publically quit supporting the bad ones then they will just have to deal with the attitudes and mistrust it brings on. Things may be on the up and up where you are, but they sure as heck ain't here. And as far as the tune goes about what they have to deal with, well, they chose the job. It's not an excuse. I have actually had an LEO show me his "throwaway" as a means to intimidate when I was completely cooperative on a pure harassment stop. To me, that is a premeditated act committed before that officer even hit the street, And I need to trust these guys!? As for "Many members here when faced with a two on one situation would draw there gun and just shoot", guess that explains the back shooting of the biker stopped on another thread, where it was obvious and clear the officer was wrong, and publicly supported by his department and Union until it was proved otherwise in a trial. Gee. Cry me a river. That's my stand on it. Don't like it, clean your house up first then tell me mine is dirty. And yes, I have friend and relatives  that are LEO's. They know where I stand. Even my own brother. You treat me in a courteous and professional manner and you will receive the same. As far as the foul mouthed Jack offs around here, I have no pity for them.

TSANI's last 2 sentences cover the whole situation there.  Seem as though certain "groups" of people no long are willing to treat people courteous and professionally. Personally I think that video is a good example of why the police should go back to using night sticks and choke holds. If the "minority" community wants to be treated fairly let THEM TREAT PEOPLE/POLICE FAIRLY with repsect!
