Getting ready to go on a trip. Figured for once I would plan ahead and bring a spare bulb for the rear tail light. Service manual only provides the HD part number. Can some one spare me the hassle of taking off the lens and provide the bulb number so I can grab one at an auto parts store. Searched the net for a while found nothing. Thanks!

Should be good ol dual element 1157.

just take a phillips, it's a common bulb and you can replace it at any wal-mart, autoparts store, those are cheap  I would however take a spare H4 lightbulb if that goes out late at night you are in trouble...

Do they make the 1157 with the rectangular plug? I changed it once couple years back, it was not round. I know because I had a couple round bulbs in the tour pack pretty sure they were 1157's.

Getting old now so CRS is setting in....

Why not just pull the taillight lens and make sure everything is GTG in there and that the bulb base isn't corroded into the socket?  Since the bulbs usually come two to a pack, you could change the bulb and carry the spare.  That way, you don't have to get rear-ended at night 500 miles from home to find out that your bike's taillight bulb has burned out.  +1 on the spare H4.

better pull cover and make sure if it takes a 1157 round or a 3157 wedge. my 04 uses wedge not positive about 03

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Got off my lazy ass and took off the lens. The bulb is the 3157 wedge type. Nice thing about those is plastic does not corrode. Turns out I had a spare in the glove box of the pick-up so I am all set. My used 86 tour pack had the light bar when I bought it so I also have 2 additional tail/brake lights.

Upgraded the headlight to the new style a couple weeks ago so I shoud be all set there, everything is brand new. The H4 was almost unnoticeable during the day time, can't count how many times a cage would pull right out in front of me. Although the newer headlight assembly does not completely sole this problem it is brighter.
