Doing a brake upgrade on an older FXR, I see there are several brands of 2000 and up calipers available. The chrome OEM ones are probably most desirable, but cost an arm and a leg. Dealer take-offs show up on ebay reasonably priced, but are either black or dull aluminum. Looking at chrome ones, I see aftermarket ones are available for $225-500. I'd like to keep price down, but  am a little worried about quality of the $225 ones. Does anyone have any experience with the cheaper ones?
Thanks,
Joe

Stick with the major brands (Hawghalters, Performance Machine, GMA, Brembo, etc.) and you'll be fine.  Sometimes you can find them on eBay for a song and a dance.  There was a seller with new HHI calipers for ~$149 a while back.

I'm running HHI on one bike, PM on the other and there is a greater difference between the brake pad performance than in the calipers.  Don't like the way they stop, get stickier brake pads.

The thing with chrome is that tolerances change if chrome gets where it's not supposed to be.  This is especially true if it was bad chrome job.  I would rather run black or aluminum caliper than get a crapped up set of chrome OEM.  If you really want chrome, I would suggest that you go with an aftermarket caliper that was chromed at the factory.
