Going to be installing a harley cooler, had $200 on harley visa so used it to buy a harley oil cooler instead of jagg. Been reading a lot of posts on leaks, should I put sealant on the gasket? should I make one out of some other material? Plus the filter looks like it's gonna be a mofo to change. Any tips on the do's an don'ts will be appreiciated. Espessialy the filter change been using harley right along and would like to continue, I know the K&N suppose to be as good and shorter, again any thoughts will be appreiciated . Thanks Greg...

I don't know your exact setup.  Jagg sells anti-rotation brackets and AN hardware for use with their cooler which may work with your cooler.  I'll post a file over in the tech tip section about how to do the AN hardware conversion.

I put the Hd premium oil cooler on my 04 flhtc 4 yrs ago,no leaks so far? What leaks?

Seems that the leak is coming from the gasket area between the thermostat and the engine. I know the earlier model would rotate when changing filter, now they have anti rotation ears to stop the turning. Some guys drilled and tapped the earlier models with some anti rotation screws, I'm sure some of the members remember that problem.

I put the HD premium oil cooler on my 99 FLHTCUI.  I used gasket shellac on that gasket and have no issues with leaks after 20k miles.  I did have to replace the CPS to the newer low profile unit, and use K&N filters though.

I put a very thin layer of red hi temp silicone on both sides of the gasket, then just torqued it down, it has not leaked yet and it has been quite a while. A little tip for that 7/16 allen wrench you need to do the job, sears has single chiesls for some thing like 1.50$ some of them have shafts that are 7/16, I bought one and cut a chunk off with the chop saw and used it with a 7/16 socket, worked really well. Just bring a socket or use one of theirs to find the right size chisel.

Going to be installing a harley cooler....

I've had the HD cooler installed for almost four years and no leaks.  Did not use any sealer, except maybe a bit of Hylomar to keep it in place--don't recall, actually.  I certainly don't think it would hurt, though.  Also, oil filter isn't any or much more trouble to install if you have the cap wrench that accesses it from the left side with a ratchet and extension.

I installed the H-D oil cooler about 2,000 miles ago.  Noticed a leak this weekend  It's apparently such a slow leak that it didn't even drip a single drop on the garage floor but it did wet the bottom of the oil filter, the voltage regulator  and the top of the motor mount.  Going to try a new gasket with some Permatex.

Just installed an Ultra Cool.  I sure as heck hope the thing doesn't start leaking.  I didn't use any extra sealant or anything.  Didn't say to.  Is this a common issue or what?

The adapter gasket started to seap on my '09 Street Glide after 4,000 miles. Coated the new hard fiber gasket with Gasgacinch. Never had a problem on the earlier style oil cooler's with the metal style gasket. Looks like it was a mistake for Harley to switch to the fiber style gasket.

Installed premium oil cooler on 2002 flhtc about 6 years ago.  This was before they had any 'locking' mechanisms.  I had two things against me.  One was the filter gasket would leak unless I really tightened it down.  This made it really hard to get the filter back off to the point the whole assembly would spin.  I used locktite, torque to specks and still it would turn when taking filter off.  Took whole assemply off and it appears the threaded piece that goes on where the filter would normally go didn't look straight.  With filter on hand tight about 40% of the filter gasket didn't touch the mating surface.  Only way to stop it from leaking was to really tighten it.  This of course made oil filter changes a real job as the whole thing would twist so I had to reinstall the cooler.  Ran across a thread here that someone suggested drilling two holes into the edges and pin it.  It has not moved since and no leaks.
If you have just purchased a cooler it probably has the problem already fixed and shouldn't leak.

I also with a 2004 RK 95" old style HD cooler 45000 miles & 2006 95" SG newer HD cooler 16000 miles. Both never a drop......But the 1977 Shovelhead with no cooler always a spot or two....LOL
