Dyna ???

Just lookin at a Dyna, a '02 to be exact. Want to get at the handlebar wireing harness plugs. Do you really have to remove the rear wheel to fish the harness back through the backbone of the frame and fender to get at the plugs? Just want to put on wire extensions and want to splice at the plug ends.

The handlebar wiring connectors are at the neck of the frame. My '97 FXDWG there is a plug on the rightside, you may have to unfold the main harness at the rear wheel depending how much slack up you need up front. I ran my wiring internally thru the bars and disconnected the connectors and didn't have to extended the wiring.

My 05 has a connector inside the backbone. If you really need access to it, there's a service loop at the back end of the backbone that lets you feed enough of the wiring harness out the front so you can get to the connector. The service manual explains how. I've done it, and I can tell you it's no picnic.

Probably not.  Like Mike my dyna had extra length of harness folded up which was accessed thru the plug in the rear fender without removing the rear wheel.  The trick is getting it unfolded and pulling on the other end of the harness at the same time.

If you do need to go thru the fender plug, I think you can jack it up and just take off the lower shock bolts and get to it w/out removing the wheel(maybe).  It's been awhile since I did mine but I think there's a cable tie for the folded part of the harness  behind the fender plug , may or may not have to cut it to get the slack.  Fish out thru the front not the back and I think you can get to all the control connectors, getting them back in is the fun part if I remember right,like said been awhile.

I didn't remove the wheel or fender. I pulled the fender plug and gently pulled out the service loop from there and then fed it through the backbone. Also, there's a rubber plug in the front part of the frame, just forward of the tank on the right side. You need to pry the plug out enough to cut the cable tie that straps the harness to the plug. Replacing it is a royal pain. It goes easier if you have a friend who can pull from the front while you push from the back and visa versa when you put it back. You'll need a lot of patience. I did it so I could install a Kury module that converts the turn signals to signals plus running lights and uses only one wire for each light. The connector is located about 6 inches inside the backbone from the front. If the module ever craps out, I'll be one pissed puppy.

also try spraying some lube (wd40) on the wires and into the backbone it will help them move a little easier and not hurt a thing.   :up:

Thanks people. Once I found the "service loop" you speak of, not a problem. Got the extra 4 ins. I needed. Didn't have to splice afterall...

I have a 99FXDL and I was thinking about putting the wiring inside the handle bars this winter. Is it the same as a 02? Just what am I going to have to do to get the extra length needed? I have bought a wire extention kit and thought about plugging them into the connector. Which is easier fishing the connector out  or cutting and splicing them together
