Not another lifter thread  :banghead:

Well some have posted that SBC Lifters are the same as the HD 18538-99B Lifters, so I thought I'd get one and see for myself.
And are they?     No, they're close but are not the same.

I purchased a GM Lifter from the local cage dealer. GM 17122490 Lifter:  Sold Each, Packaged 13/07/2005, Made in the USA
Also available from Summit Racing Part Number: NAL-17122490

This is the lifter used in the GenIII, LS1, LS2, ... etc engines.

I'm told that GM 12499225 is a Set of 16 lifter kit and if I open the kit normally there will be 2 boxes (8 each) of 17122490's inside.
Also available from Summit Racing Part Number: NAL-12499225 , $130 / set

Buying them as singles would be too expensive, 3 singles would equal the cost of a set.

Would I use them ?  No, when I run out of B's I may give the new Woods Directionals a try.

I haven't put most dimensions on the pix as for the most part they are the same.
The notable difference is the diameter of the pushrod oil feed hole and the width/shape of the curve on the underside of the pushrod cup which in conjunction with the disc forms the valve.

That settles it for me. Thanks for the info.

I would have any problem runnign them.. Running a set of Crane 10530s.. I swapped the lifter cup though.. Motor is nice and quiet.. 0 lifter noise.. SnS625 cam.. 170 lb springs in the heads..

Which means the S&S Travel Limiters will fit.

Thanks wise and great Royal cat. LOL   :teeth:
great info

Does anyone know off hand the size or the oil passage through a push rod?
Is it the same as the cup?

The entry/exit passage on a stock pushrod is .100", I've not checked them in the middle.

I don't know what "this is"  but I see the pic in your post, perhaps switch browsers.   :teeth:

Can you see the one below ?

In your OP, I only see this instead of the 4 pics:

The oil hole in the harley lifter is very large in relation to needed oil flow. My race roller lifters run in bushed lifter bores. They have the lifter feed holes in the lifters drilled 90 degrees out from the .060 feed hole I drilled in the bore bushing. So the only true oil feed they get is the .001 clearance around the diameter of the hole. This is enough to feed my rockers and pushrods  I run spring pressures of 340 lbs on the seat and 900 lbs over the nose at 7800 rpm, no failures. Kinda says to me don't worry about the smaller hole in the sbc lifter. If the rest of the parts are good quality, which they must be to run long miles in a production engine, I wouldn't be afraid to use them.

  What and where are you measuring?

FYI.. I just took apart a set of Feuling lifters and they are the same as the Chevy lifter...

There is another difference in lifters. The surface contact area for the push rod. The GM or Feuling lifter has a larger cup for more contact with the push rod.

Well that certainly isn't the case with the GM 17122490 Lifter I took apart and measured.

Can't comment on the GM lifters but on the Comp Cams/V-Thunder site the Competition lifters for SBC (High Energy lifter PN 850-1 & Pro Magnum lifter PN 875-1) are the same as the V-thunder lifters for TC (Roller lifter PN 850-1 & Hy-Rev lifter PN 875-1).

Maybe GM is having some quality issues like HD is?

I have been using the Woods lifters with Great results. All of my builds get them if there is room in the budget for them.
