Well I only got this far ,I am going to work on the rear fender some today. I don't have a lot of time as I have to get ready for work tomorrow. Small stroker motor 84 cu in , B grind cam, a little trick valve work, Lowers built By Bob White at Mitchells Modesto Harley Davidson, Heads machined by Dave Shipansky, tricks by Grant Willems, assembled and fit together by me. I started paint here at home ,but my neighbor has liver problems and started complaining loudly about the fumes. So after the body work I took the stuff down to Jim Ogawa and had him finish the paint. Jim is a great custom builder ,pin stripper ,and painter, He belongs to Arlen Ness's club the Hamsters and does custom work for Arlen and Corey. The pics do not show the quality of the finish, a variation of the 1961 paint scheme , Hi fi purple and Birch white, with a black hand laid cover stripe. This Pan has a lot of original parts and is way more original than the 58 I built which had tons of imported parts. This one still has some aftermarket parts  out of necessity , but I tried to keep it as a 1961. This is an old Chopper, that was totally thrashed, and an original chassis that I found on Craigs list in San Francisco.. ..More later...Mule...

My research showed that Hi Fi Purple and Birch white was an Optional Color in 1961-62.. The fender stripe was not part of an original paint scheme that was my Idea to kind of marry the sheet metal together....Mule...

And a fine idea.
Thanks for the pictures, your motor looks awesome. I'm not much of a chrome fan, but with your paint the combination is well balanced IMO.

beautiful work, she's a honey, but i got to ask, why no linkert?

cause of the upgrade motor?

Mule

Well she did not come with a decent carb, I got a smokin deal on the S&S, and I thought it would better for the small stroker...Mule...

panz4ever

Mule that is one sweet looking build. How far away from starting her up?

Mule

She is wired and ready  ,all I need is some 5/16 stainless steel tubing to fab up a fuel line ,filter set up for the super E. A local bike supply wants to shoot it for their calendar 2012-13 ,so I am not going to add fluids until after the shoot...Mule...

Looks great !
One question though,  if it's a '62, why'd you pick the '61 paint scheme ? http://pan-clan.com/?p=811

Mule

I am no purest expert, The limited research I did showed that scheme to be 61-62, I liked it I did it, good enough. Also a stock paint scheme would not have the fender stripes or the hand laid black cover stripe...Mule...

Mule, the important thing is that you like it.  :agree:
I agree that the fender stripes and the black cover
stripe are add ons that enhance the look.
The emblems are exactly the same for '61 & '62.
However, the tank graphics are different and you
have the '61 scheme.  Just sayin'.
Respectfully,   Ironman

", but I tried to keep it as a 1961."

Brilliant edit Mule !

you're welcome.

Man what a nice job . I asked about the colors because I like em and never saw that color on a Pan. I never knew it was a oem color. That bike just looks real right. Congrats

Yep... damn fine looking panhead.  The paint looks great as does the rest of it.  I'd love to have a panhead like that to park next to my chopper.  Take which ever one appeals to me on a particular day.

Ironman, I knew you would catch that! You were so obviously bothered by it not being the correct scheme so since I built it out of craigs list parts and an old thrashed chopper I can Make it a 61 if I want too, Because it has an assigned VIN tag  on the motor due to the chopper title.  Also I like the 61 scheme way better than the 62 scheme! I am happy with it, Thanks everyone!.......................Mule...

You will find that's a nice running motor, I build my '61 with 4.5" stroker flywheels about 65K miles ago. A set of rings at about 40K, still running good today. Ran a Rivera cam, similar to an Andrew B, for a long time, but found it made for finicky starting. Switched to an S&S cam with less duration and overlap, starts much more predictably (but lost some of that mid-range punch!) Anyway, break it in right and enjoy it when you  blast past your first Evo rider!
P.S. Here's my original 1961 gas tanks/dash, painted with my own non-1961 design!

Ironman

"You were so obviously bothered by it not being the correct scheme"

Wrong Mule.  I couldn't care less how anyone paints their bike. All I did was try to correct your statement,
( which you have since edited out), that the bike was a '62 and that the paint scheme was a variation of the '61 - '62 factory paint.  It
was just my observation that there indeed was a difference between the two. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you want to take it as a personal affront to you or your bike that's your prerogative but nothing could be
further from the truth.

Great looking ride.  Looks like you put a lot of work into it.

I  love "resto-customs" (what the hot rodders call them) cause you can build them anyway that you want.
There's miles to go before I sleep.

Mule,
Nice job & the colors look great! I really like the looks of a pan motor. Got me thinking about something to park next to the Road King.

The longer you wait, the older you get!  You just gotta jump in!  I procrastinated on an original knuckle.  Now I kick myself in the azz everyday.

Mule....You about done with that bike?

Yeah, I am almost finished, I need to do a fuel line ,filter  that will work with the old style tanks and the super E. I got the rubber sleeves and some 1/4" steel line and a couple of different filters to work with today while I was down in the Valley. Ready to fire when the fuel line is done  and a quick check of things I left loose on purpose. I will have it ready tomorrow . I am just busy with a work project and not much spare usable time right now...Mule...

Snuff, No funds at this time for a Panhead but the idea is in my head and you know where that leads you too.  :idea:If I did one I think I would like to use the S&S motor if I could afford it but never know what deals you might come across if your not in a hurry.  :smiled:
