Anyone ever paint the sliver backing plate that comes with the SE air cleaner? I know Harley sells the black power coated one and the chrome version of course. But without giving more money to Harley, I was thinking of rattle can painting the sliver backing plate Black to match the heads etc. of the motor so the backing plate won't stand out so much from behind the chrome football LoL. I was thinking of maybe a black hi-temp. engine paint maybe

Anyone had bad luck or good luck with this ??

I painted mine with gloss black hi temp engine paint.  That stuff is nice and sticky and has held up great.  Here's a pic of the little bit of the standoff that you can see behind the cover.

Looks nice RD, How long ago did you paint yours? Have you had to go back and touch it up? Not sure if I want something I have to chase all the time keeping it looking nice. That's why I haven't done anything with mine yet LoL.

I painted it when I changed from the chrome EVO round cover to the black crossbones cover when they first came out so it's been awhile.  Haven't had to touch it up at all.

I've done a few with (almost) no problems. I did one with flat black bbq paint, worked great. Tried gloss black appliance epoxy on one, and it didn't like the bare aluminum. Ended up gdoing it over with el-cheapo gloss black, and it worked fine. Did a couple more with the el-cheapo stuff and they were also fine.

has anyone tried a cheap texture paint yet?  I would like to piant the one on my lowrider to match the engine.

I did one with granite finish Krylon Fusion (the stuff that bonds well with plastic). I had forgotten about that one. It was pretty much satin black with varying shades of gray "flecks" in it. It came out really nice. I would guess that the engine paint available from the MoCo would look really nice. I like gloss 'cuz all my powdercoat is gloss.

BIG  DAN, what is the Flat Black BBQ paint your talking about? I'm thinking maybe a flat black that matches the motor closer than the High Glossy. I wasn't thinking about the Harley Dealership route but I guess they do sell spray paint for the motors to touch them up with.

Is that a better way to go to match the motor with and lasting longer ?

Darrell,
Just go to your local Mom & Pop hardware store. It'll be with the rest of the spray paint. It'll say high-heat, or bbq, right on the can. It holds up really well, and if ya ever did need to touch it up, the backing plate comes off quickly & easily enough.

I did my (already ceramic coated black) heatshields with it a coupla years ago, and they still look fine.
