I was talking to a friend ,who had just come from a custom build shop, on the floor were four slammed Shovels being customized. The shop owner told him that the Shovelhead is the new FAD and the wealthy customers are buying them up and having them customized. A lot of  Pans and Shovels were shipped over seas in the eighties. You may Regret selling that old Shovelhead cheap.... Had the old Shovel out for a ride yesterday.....Mule...

I guess it's the old school and instant credibility that goes with owning a Shovel.....wait until they have to wrench on it.   ;D

He said wealthy customers, Dave!  They don't have to worry about wrenching if they don't want to.

I bought an Evo bagger in 2000 when everyone was riding softails, then baggers became all the rage a few years ago.  Sold that and bought the shovel I always wanted this year.  Lets see if they become the rage that baggers did.

P.S. - Holy s&*^ - just noticed things like spell check and preview - nice digs at our new home, huh?  Thanks for the hard work admins!

It is a real shame so many old Harleys ended up overseas.  I ain't got nothing against some dude or dudette (babe) from another country owning a Harley.  It is just the thought that those bikes will most likely never come back.  And so less older Harleys for up and coming American Scooter tramps...."sigh".....just my 0.02 worth. :'(

Not for long, if they own a Shovel!  Vin, you are a trend setter.  Gonna keep my eye on you.  Yep, let's keep those shovels on the roads.  I was on a toy run 3 weeks ago.  Probably 500 bikes, and only 2 shovels among them.  They are out there, but less on the road due to age and owners having more than one bike.  Keep 'em if you got 'em.

Unfortunately, some less "wealthy" folks are selling their shovels during these tough economic times.  It's a shame.

Sorry ModelABob my 82 FXWG came to the UK in 91.
Saved that bike from the scrap yard, and it gets most of the money I earn.
We love em just the same.
Ride safe.

Dawgtired,

Hey, no problem dude, I was just thinking out loud.  I guess I'm a border line 'ol fart
and I got a softness in ma' heart for the early Harley's, especially the generator equipped
ones.  I'd love to have an SS-100 Jag or a V-12 Lagonda if I could afford it.  And would care less about what some bloke thought about me bringing it back stateside.  Peace :)

I'm probably as hardcore as ModelABob about the old bikes.  I would rather have an old knuck/pan/shovel/flathead then any new bike.  I think the guys on the other side of the Atlantic have done an outstanding job of helping us preserve the heritage.  15 or 20 years ago when the older bikes were headed for the scrap yard and probably the crusher they were bought up cheap by guys who dreamed of owning a piece of H-D history.  Some of the coolest photos I see from bike shows come from places like Sweden, Denmark, Norway, England, etc.  These guys have strong roots in the art of custom bike building and it usually involves no billet.

Ha Ha - LOL.  BTW, I'm far from being a trendsetter.  Best to keep your eyes elsewhere - if anything, I'm usually late to the party .

Gotta agree with Lew - if Pappy starts writing in the "Queen's English" we'd better have someone go check on him.

I have 5 bikes, I only need two more and I'll have one for each day of the week. I've owned over 100 bikes in my 39 years of riding. I've loved many of them, hated some of them but my absolute, all time favorite is my '83 FXRT. I stopped selling bikes a few years bac, now I just keep adding.

BTW, my Shovel is my daily ride, the others all have their place, but a day without my butt in my Shovel saddle, well, it just ain't a day worth talking about

one day a twink rider sad to me was.

The only reason any one would ride a old bike is that they cant afford a new one.

I told him If I road a new bike it would look like yours and I think your bike is ugly.
Buying pages 9 through 27 out of the Harley catalog is NOT building a custom.

77 Shovel,

Here, here! Stamp...Stamp.....Stamp! (the sound of heavy biker boots hitting the floor).  Ah, for the days when Men were Men, Women were Women, people built their
own bikes and everybody liked it that way. ;D

  Now that IS funny.    ::)

There just isn't a Harley that sounds like a Shovelhead.  I have even had twinkie owners comment.  Of course I have owned mine for 26 years, so I'm biased.

Harpo

Currently have two Shovels - a '68 and an '80.  Also have a '99 Road King (Twinkie).  To sum it up, the Shovels are my babies, the Twinkie is transportation only.

Hey Guys-
I have built a couple ol' bikes myself. I bought a brand new fatboy in 99'...hated it. Sold 3 months after I got it. Bought a new FLHT Standard last year, big motor, 6 speed, I may sound crazy but I got bored with it. I am a blue collar stiff who likes wrenching on my own stuff. Cant really do that with the new bikes, or atleast cant justify it. But I like being in the garage with it as much as on the road for some reason, I don't think I am alone on that am I? Let me know, maybe I am just nuts. But its a real love affair to take some cash, pay outright for an ol' bike and make it yours. I don't know, I just downright think the ol' bikes are cool. Going through an 83' FL starting this Friday night. My Friday and Saturday nights this winter will be as follows: dinner with family, hang with em' til 9 pm, put on some coffee and to the garage til 4 am. With new the new ones you can only polish so many times......Anyway don't get me started. Anyone can go get a loan, a shirt, some boots and a chain thingy wallet, but ask em' to help you pull the trans and put in some new gears, or even what the gap is on their plugs and watch the dumb looks come... my 2 cents worth.

Less is more....let's keep it simple!

Let's go back to the rich guys buying shovels.......wait until they try to find a dealer to work on it.  Good luck! ;D
