Gents,

the shop guys have a 1988 ElectraGlide in the works. Decision is to replace the engine with a remanufactured one from HD or to buy a new engine from the SMART HD engine program.

I have conflicting info as to the fitment of engine 16160-99 to a 1988 rubber mount frame of an ElectraGlide. HD limits it to the Softail line for reasons not clear to me. As long as the engine and inner primary mount are the same, it should work.
I know that the head breather came in 1993 along with other changes to the oil circuit, but that does not seem to be difficult to adapt.

Does anybody know for sure?
Where can I buy on engine online?

Thanks guys

I think it's going to be a breather problem.  There are 2 locations for bottom breathers.  One for ST frames and one for rubbermounts.  This can be seen on a lot of aftermaket cases which have both holes drill.

I can not see why this would only fit a 99?

Put a -99 mill in my 84 FLHTC and it goes in with no major problems. The oil lines have to be changed since the -99 has the oil filter on the front of the motor. I went to the shop and looked at a service manual for a 99 Softail to see how the oil flow went. Plumbed it up to the oil tank with no issues and then capped of the filter under the frame. If you use the filter on the frame and remove the one off the front, you will have to redo the oil pump to match the one you have on your old mill. The line points to the front and cannot be turned to the rear to go to your old filter.

Thanks guys. That confirms my thoughts. New 99 Evo engine goes with front oil filter, breathers in head require a matching a/c bottom plate and the oil line from the tank has to go to the correct position on the pump.

Thanks again guys

One other route you could go.  I developed a crack in the engine case on my 1988 flhtp. Sent away my L side case (with vin) and received R+L cases with same VIN for ~$650 shipped.  These were new bottom breather cases.

Ran crate motor for the 6 months it took me to rebuild  "original" motor with new cases. ~$2700 for crate motor, top breather, front oil filter and it fit fine.  ran for 6mo.  Sold ~$2k

Then rebuild with your choice of bottom end+pistons.  I went with 89 in stroker kit from $+$.  It's really fun.

Sold all my old engine parts. (Crank, pistons, rods, lifters, etc etc.PAIN-I-T-A!) Net it was probably$2000-$2300 in parts and labor. (Incl. crate motor swap.) Did most of the work.  But didn't have all tools so . . .

When I built the 89 inch stroker for my 1988 bike, I replaced the OEM oil pump with a Jim's unit.  It was a later model oil pump designed for the front mounted oil filter.  When I fit it to the frame I discovered that the retrun line fitting from the bottom of the oil pump was VERY close to the frame rail on the right hand side.  I put in a polyurethane front mount to stop the engine from moving around so much (up-and-down) but eventually I switched the oil pump face to the original type (with fittings only on the top) because I was so freaked out about it.  You may not have any trouble with yours but it was a concern for me.
