Hey,

Has anyone out there devised a method of holding the transmission pulley without buying the fancy tool?  I don't mind buying tools but when it's something you'll use once in a few years it's a bit hard to justify.

I checked the homemade tool section but didn't see anything.

Thanks,
Sean

Yeah, jsachs gave a tip about a piece of angle iron (i think) with a notch cut to hold on the swing arm pivot bolt. If he see's this i'm sure he'll give all the details.

In the past, I have successfully used a fat friend to sit on the bike with it in gear.  I do have the tool but when I've been stuck in the field without it, large biker trash has come in handy.

I cut a piece of old belt, then c-clamped it to the pulley with a small c-clamp. The old belt is to keep the clamp from slipping on the teeth and messing them up. I used it just like you'd use the fancy tool and it worked fine for me.

I believe it was Harley Hog that had a way of locking the tranny in two gears at once to prevent rotation. But as you can imagine, this involves removal of the top cover and a replacement gasket.

Believe it or not you can easily hold the trans sprocket w/one hand while running an impact wrench to spin the nut off w/the other. I did get the Georges Garage locking tool for assy tho.
