A customer came by today, was talking about his Shovel. He said he wanted to add an oil filter and a few other parts on his stock 81 FL. I told him if it's stock, there is a filter in his oil tank. So I took him out and showed him on mine. I lifted my seat, popped open the oil filter cap and pointed at the filter. When I put it back together, I fired it up and went to lunch. When I got back from lunch, I noticed that the small oil spot under Betsy was now a huge puddle! I broke the gasket inside the cap! Oil got hot, and was gushing out! Well my chain won't need lubing for a while, because that's where it all went! I think after I put a new gasket on in the morning, I might have to reconsider my ONCE A YEAR BIKE WASH!

LOL easy

I was 350-400 miles from home at Little Sturgis KY in 2002. The main bushing in my 4 speed went out and took the seal with it pretty much spraying everything. I filled it with heavy gear oil at a stop then at the next stop I fit nearly a full can of STP in it. I got home but it was ugly, the rear 1/3 of the bike was pretty well rustproofed... like my left leather bag. My buddies made me ride at the back.

That's the most effective way to lube the chain I've ever found Mark.  A leaky main drive gear seal keeps a steady flow of oil going to the chain.  Unfortunately I wasn't running a chain guard back then.  Kept the rider nicely oiled too.  And I was wearing a white t-shirt that day.  LOL

That main driver gear seal thing is especially effective on an FLT with the enclosed drive chain.  I just have to make sure and keep the tranny full.  Level in the chaincase is regulated by the hole worn in the lower rubber gaiter.

LOL Yeah a few other good ways to lube the chain!
Several years ago, my brother and I were riding down to Austin for a rally. I was riding my 73 Ironhead. We had a few other tag-alongs riding with us and they stayed behind John and I. Between Johns 74 Shovel and my 73, those pretty new bikes riding behind us, got covered in oil! One of the guys, after we got camp set up started cleaning up his pretty brand new Duece. He washed his wimp shield then handed me the rag and said, "HERE, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OIL BACK!" They figured out not to ride behind us.
