Subject: [So. Suburban ABATE] Now 3 Motorcycle Helmet bills!

Well that didn't take long....

State Representative Mary Flowers (Democrat- 31st District) has single handedly introduced 3 Mandatory Helmet Bills aimed at motorcyclists!!
HB0290 is a mandatory helmet bill that would require ALL motorcycle riders & passengers to wear a helmet.
HB0285 is a mandatory helmet bill that would require riders & passengers under 27 yrs of age to wear a helmet... yes, 27.
HB0292 is a mandatory helmet bill that would require ALL ATV riders to wear a helmet.  It would also prevent anyone from operating an ATV without a valid drivers license (nobody under 16), and would include a 6 month license suspension if caught on the street on an ATV.
State Senator Ira Silverstein (Democrat - 8th District) has introduced 2 non-motorcycle related helmet bills as well.  As most of us are aware these are the type of bills that can be used to establish a legal precident for requiring helmet use.
SB0055 would require anyone under 16 yrs of age to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.
SB0057 would require ALL skiers & snowboarders to wear a helmet if they are "in a ski area".
Please let your riding friends know about these bills and be ready to contact your legislators, when asked, to voice your opposition to these bills.
Respectfully,
   Brian

Thanks for the heads-up, Brian, and good to "see" ya. I'll be ready to make phone calls and/or send letters when needed.

A reminder to everyone: You needn't be an Illinois resident (or resident of any state considering such legislation) to make your voice heard. I and many others are of the opinion that the voice of non-residents can carry a lot of weight when these legislators are made to realize that such legislation could have a serious effect on tourism and the monies generated by tourism. They may not be well versed in "freedom" but you can bet your butt they speak fluent "dollar-ese."

With the state of our state u would think they have bigger problems to worry about.

I wish the opponents of this bill would work to add car drivers onto it also.
If it was going to wreck the hairdo of a woman it would be voted down quicker.

....and if you are a Illinois resident.... One of the best things you can do is join your local ABATE for $25 a year.
800-87-ABATE.  Get involved, because the people trying to take away your freedoms are deeply involved.

Sorry HHTer for this shameless plug.

Did you ever notice that the preponderance of "Big Brother" legislation such as this usually seems to be introduced by politicians whose  official title is preceded by the letter D?

Remember when the seat belt law came along? :dgust:
Remember what was said then? :argue:
I can also remember when California adopted the helmet law and I heard: "If I have to wear a helmet I'll quit riding". :gob:
I'm sure there were a couple/few who quit, but I see more and more full-faced helmets replacing the protest "Beanies" of yore.
Guess I'm just jealous cause I gotta wear one. :embarrassed:

Back of one of my shirts -- "It was reported to me that over 400 motorcycle riders and clubs converged in the district where I was running, and caused -- or contributed to, the defeat... my defeat."   Ex-Senator Howard Brookins   May 21, 1992 .  They get mad when incumbents can not win primary, and we do have friends in office.

Illinois had one about then, but it got slapped in court real hard. No helmet law Illinois and Iowa.  There is slight explanation about Utah BRC in Earl's page.

Actually Mi. Abate does a lot. Members who get a ticket because a cop doesn't like the looks of his/her helmet get representation to fight the ticket in court. Thus many muncipalities leave everyone alone. Without Abate you'd be running stock pipes. Also your insurance rates would be higher too. They are for more, than just against the helmet law.

I wish someone would make a helmet so comfortable, you wouldn't know it was on. I have had them all, some are better than others, but , man on the moon! Come on! It's not rocket science, or if it is, no one wants to invest enough to make it happen.

Back in the 80's, AGV made an air-conditioned full face helmet that you would plug in like heated gear. It took a while to start cooling, but once it did it worked very well. I don't know if it, or anything like it, is available today and it was extremely expensive at the time. I couldn't wear one now due to my neck, but it was the most comfortable helmet I ever encountered.

I never owned one, but I "demo'd" one for about a month when I worked part-time in a sport-bike shop. We didn't sell a lot due to the expense and sport-bike riders tending to be young kids without a lot of coin. Back then a top of the line Shoei, who was king at the time, was a little over 200. These were at least triple that, and quite possibly quintuple; I just can't remember for sure. 650 comes to mind, as does 1000.

I don't remember there being any warranty issues, but work picked back up and I left there within a few months of the helmet's release, so there may or may not have been warranty issues. If you wear a helmet every day, by law or by choice, something like that might be well worth looking into.

Seems like I remember seeing a solar cooled helmet advertised a few years back.  A solar panel in the top of the helmet furnished power to the cooling unit.  Don't remember pricing, not sure if it even said,  but sure it would have been pricey.
