This is my first time posting on this site so please bear with me. I'm working on trying to repair 2 stipped cylinder stud holes in the case on a 85 evo. These are the early ones with male head bolts and an interference fit on the case end of the stud. Am I better off to replace all the studs and head bolts with the later style studs with the shoulder on them? I'm a machinest doing this for a friend. If I plug and weld the stripped holes or just heli-coil or use some other thread repair insert,I can see having a problem threading in the stock stud as the threads on this early style have an interference fit. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Yes, do it right and all at the same time.

Check this thread => http://harleytechtalk.com/htt/index.php/topic,16632.msg167756.html#msg167756 where Jackrocks fixed his cases with Gardserts.

We've used Heli-Coil brand thread inserts with GREAT success in this case, many times.

Although I havent done this particular repair to a Harley case, I have used Timeserts on a Caddy Northstar engine. They are much stronger than  a heli-coil. I believe they have a kit for Harley crankcases.

Timeserts are proper.
IMO, since these are '85 cases, why don't you consider buying a set of aftermarket cases, as stud pulling, cracking, and Timkin race boss inserts loosening will become a thing of the past.

Mine's an '85 too. Should I be worried?

I also have an 85Evo, set up with 10:1 pistons and shaved heads making big compression.  I was always told the early Evo cases were the strongest.  Still using the original cyl studs too.

Some do.......Some don't.
I only gamble on street races.
