I would think you would be fine as long as the tear isnt to bad and you are going to use a tube, Todd

Need more info to give an informed recommendation.  Might be nothing or it might be something that compromises the beads "hold" on the rim.  Could also pose a danger to the tube if it's left any sharp edges that the tube will come in contact with.  Do you have a photo?

It laid back the rubber for about and inch you can see the cord but the rubber lays right back in and there are no sharp edges.

I would get some rubber cement and glue the flap down then mount the tire and check for leaks at that area.
From what you described, you didn't hurt the strength of the tire.

I would replace the tire. Just because a tire has a tube in it does not mean there is no pressure on the tire itself, just the opposite. If the pressure splits the tire at the point of damage the tube could actualy pinch and blow out in the crevice between the tire bead and rim..

With only two tires, I want them both perfect as possible...  Kinda hard to ride on just one wheel for very long... JMO jb

replace it,  $150 is nothing compaired to a blow tire causing an accident.

Next time make sure you lube it up real good before trying to install it

Why would the tire blow out?

If you decide to use it, glue it with RP 30.  Absolutely the best rubber cement I've ever seen, stronger than the rubber.  It's about six bucks a bottle.

Without being able to see the tire, if the steel cord is not damaged you should be ok but, if it was me I would get a new tire just to be safe.  Tires hold a lot of pressure and the bead takes most of that pressure to seal it to the rim.  If you damaged the cord it could blow out on you and it isn't fun when that happens.  It's up to you, it's your bike and your life.  How much is your life worth to you and your family?  Just something to think about.  The two most important parts on your bike are tires and brakes.  Both will either save or take lives.

I learned this lesson the hard way. A friend had a simular situation on a bike back in the 70's. He ran it for months with no problems. One day, my car's water pump shaft just broke off, so I asked my friend to give me a ride on his bike into town to the auto parts store. On the way there the rear tire blew out at about 55-60mph. Later we concluded it was blown in the same place the bead had been damaged.

Anyway, when that rear tire blew, the bike went berserk. Thrown off, I landed on my butt with hands, feet, and head in ther air. I skipped like a stone across a lake for quite a ways down the asphalt road, still on my butt. I only thought one thing the whole time; "If I lose my balance and roll or skid on something besides my butt, it's gonna hurt bad." After quite a distance, I did loose the balance and rolled the last 20 feet or so. Although there was some rash, I was not injured.

When I asked my more badly busted up buddy how bad my rear was, he said "no blood, but your wallet doesn't look so good."  I reached back to pull out my wallet and it slipped right through the large hole once occupied by my jeans pocket . I had rode out almost the entire distance on top of my wallet. There was a large hole in the outside face of my wallet. When I opened it up the money inside had two holes in every bill. There was only the one layer on the inside of my wallet that had survived. I was glad I survived and would not get back on a bike for almost 15 years. I knew someone was looking out for me, but I wasn't ready to gamble on good fortune twice.

In time, the fear went away and I got a bike. Only two serious accidents since, but I lived through both of them. Combined with other events in my life that could have turned out a lot worse, I now tell people that I am into about 3 lives of a second cat.
