1981 clutch adjusting issues

need help trouble shooting clutch adjustment issues.when clutch lever is pulled engine running if put in gear bike wants to move .so I tried to adjust clutch going by clymer service manual.turning adjuster on cable until excessive slack.taking out adjuster plug from primary case cover looseining lock nut turning adjuster screw until hard to turn then 2 extra turns.taking out free play in cable by tuning out cable adjuster tightened lock nut for cable adjuster.turn clutch adjuster screw out until loose then turn back in until screw starts to seat then turn back out 1/4 to 1/2 turn hold adjusting screw and tighten lock nut. did this and clutch seems to have gotten worse. any ideas on what to do next do i have to do anything behind release disk?

I have always used this procedure for 81, found it worked better than the manual.  Let us know how it works out for you.

Hippo clutch adjustment procedure


1. Loosen the clutch cable adjuster and shorten the cable sleeve as much as possible, but don’t mess with the lever. Just leave it alone until the 3rd step.

2. Loosen the lock nut on the clutch pack push rod adjuster.

3. Pull in the clutch lever. It should touch the handle bar grip. If it does not touch the handle bar grip back out the push rod adjuster at the clutch pack while keeping pressure on the clutch lever until it touches the handlebar.

4. When the clutch lever touches the handle bar turn in the push rod adjuster while keeping pressure with your hand on the clutch lever. When you turn in the adjuster it will start to push the lever off the handle bar. Back the adjuster out until the lever returns to just touching the handle bar. Do this a couple of times until you know you are at the point where the lever is just touching the bar. When you find this point - back the adjuster out 1/2 turn and lock it down.

5. Adjust the clutch cable to 1/8 slack and lock it down.

do not use 50 , 60, 70 weight motor oil in the trans either . primary chain adjusted to tight will do this as well. if multible atempts at adusting fails and the "drag" is quite large/heavy there's a condition where a  friction plate may seperate there lining and will  cause this
