My 09 FLHR has fast idle.. If I let it warm up for about 5 minutes it slows down but if I go for a short ride say to the store 5 to 10 minute ride.. Restart it and it goes back to fast idle again.. The dealer said turn the ignition switch 4 times off and on it will default it to a low idle.. I have tried this with some success... This is annoying and wonder if there is a fix for this or anyone have any ideas..

First I have heard of that 4 switch trick - I got used to it and reluctantly live with the fast idle, my dealer does nothing (about anything). I will be watching this thread for comments.

Like I said some success... Jury is still out,, but I have learned to live with it as well.. :wtf:

Learning to live with it wouldn't be an option for me, I'd get it fixed at any cost. Besides, you're probably still under warranty.

Tech Tip TT380 (in the documents section here) outlines a software update for the 2008 models with this condition.   It also documents the reset procedure you describe.  Although the Tech Tip applies only to 2008 models, maybe very 09s are involved as well but not documented.  Its something the dealer should be looking into for you.  At the very least he should verify you have the latest software.  I've not heard of anyone with an 09 with this condition.  My 08 had it really bad however and the update took care of it.

The reset procedure works but the root cause is that the bike "learns" where idle is.  I really struggled with this on my 2008 until I learned to take my hand off the throttle before turning the bike off.  When I first got my bike, I would just reach up with my thumb and press the kill switch.  By doing that, I had a little pressure on the throttle and over time it would creep up to a fast idle.  I would turn the switch off 4 or 5 times in a row with the switch in the run position and it would reset.  I finally got into the habit of removing my hand from the grip and then pressing the switch.  Problem solved.
