Working on replacing all the innner primary stuff that could cause an irritating drip after a ride.  Inner race had walked in but shouldn't have been leaking; may have nicked the mainshaft seal in the outer primary last time I had it off to reseal bolts.  Anyway, decided to replace everything from the mainshaft seal out.

First time installing the S&S inner race.  Install was uneventful until the race split at the position in the attached photo.  All got hard right at the end and I had to put more than the S&S called for 35 ft.lb. of torque. I looked at it and thought the gap between the back of the race and the mainshaft/5th gear seal was too big so tried to get a little more; that's when the race split.

I think I know what happened.  I believe the end of the mainshaft must be tapered and the S&S race has an inner taper on the outside end. I must have pushed the inner taper of the race past the tapered section of the mainshaft and caused the race split??

I will order another S&S race and when it gets to this point on the next install, I will stop.

Any suggestions or tips appreciated from those that have installed the S&S innner race.

it's tapered alright.

without a doubt, cant see the split in your pic but I'll take your word for it

Fit one or more snap rings

Kleetus

Lube the shaft and race with motor oil real good to aid assembly.

I did lube the shaft and the race.  I have the snap rings, xzo124 was kind enough to send me two.  Having never installed the S&S race before, either the race cannot be pushed onto the shaft any further than as shown in the photo, or I did something wrong. I have assumed that the race cannot be pushed any further on the shaft without splitting and will install the next race to this position and move on.  I was just looking for confirmation that my assumption is correct.

FSG, the split is not shown, it's on the bottom side of the race.  One quarter turn to far and it popped. Can't describe the noise but sudden and loud. wasn't sure at first what had broken but I knew I frakked up something.

You can install the race (any race) with .100" to .200" gap.  In fact, some instructions tell you to install it .100" and others .200".  I suspect that you got to .200", it was seated, and you felt you needed to get to .100".

StrokerDave

Mine stopped at the same place and works fine.

Yup, that's what happened. :embarrassed: $48 down  the drain.

I really hate that happened to you because that race is expensive.  However, I do appreciate you sharing your experience with us and especially the good photo you posted.  That will help others out, and is how we all learn and benefit from sites like this.  I plan to use this type race the next time I have to remove the primary for some reason.  I believe I may have a bearing in my clutch or transmission beginning to get noisy, so it may not be as long as I think before things come apart.

Djl, Sorry for the bummer but sometimes thats the expense when we learn. We've all been there for something or another. You should be able to feel when it comes to its stop and then stop. BTW, Where are you buying the S&S race?

les

Actually, it's supposed to be torqued to 35 ft/lbs.

I don't understand why they say to torque it to 35 ft/lbs. When I put mine on it was obvious when it bottomed out.

When you tighten down a taper it locks it on. They must have determined that torque was sufficent to keep it from walking back off.

Actually, I did feel it come to the stop but it had gotten tight before when each of the internal "ribs" (See FSGs photo in #2) hit the mainshaft.  I was thinking the tapered end was on the mainshaft and that I needed to close the gap behind the race.  Apparently, once the taper is fully engaged on the mainshaft, that's as far as she goes.  Live, learn and pay! I bought the race at Cheap Cycle Parts.

If I had stopped at 35#, the race would have been about halfway on.

Had the same problem on the 2 I installed.. Even with the threads oiled on the installer..35 fp was not enough to get he sleeve on.  I just started screwing the thing on until it felt like it was getting tighter after the 3rd rib was started on the shaft and stopped. Looked good so that's where it stayed.
