Shifting issue after gearset swap

I was able to swap out the gearset in my 90 FLHTC for a 2002 Softail and it all worked out except for a small issue.   Shifting from first to second and back down the shifter returns to its neutral position by itself.  Going up or down requires me to tap the lever to go to the next gear.  For example, in second, befor going to third and up, after using my heel shifter to go to third, I have to tap the toe shifter to return it to neutral position and reset the pawl so I can go to 4th and the same to go to 5th.  To downshift, I have to reverse the procedure.

When I changed the gearset, I kept my original detent pin and made sure the offset went between the flat spring on the shifter shaft.

Do I have to switch the detent pin or just make an adjustment to it?

And the neutral light comes on in neutral and 5th gear, but I know how to fix that.

Thanks again.

Did you check to make sure it shifted okay before putting everything else back together. It sounds like maybe linkage or something is binding. If it were the pawl ajusting screw I would think that it might do it going one way but not the other. If you disconnect the linkage from the shift arm on the tranny does the shift arm move freely and return to a neutral position?  Make sure also that the shift arm and the heim joint on the linkage are not rubbing on the inner primary. I don't think you have to replace the ajuster. I have the early style on mine and there's no problem. The neutral light thing you were expecting. I understand that the fix for that is to replace the top cover with the late style. Or just consider the light to be the neutral/high gear light. Sometimes at night though that bright light can be annoying. I have an early 2 light dash and the bright red light can sometimes make it difficult to read the speedo.

Have you had any luck yet finding the problem.

gryphon,

Saw that Jeff posted on another forum that his battery was low. Once he brought it up to normal voltage, jackshaft engaged fine.

Ed, that was another problem.

I haven't gotten to look into this any further last night, the lawn needed mowing.  I will be in the garage again this afternoon.  When it was apart, it seemed to go through the gears, but it was not returning to the neutral position when apart.  I will check to make sure the shifter arm is not hitting on the case or the inner primary.  I may have to take off the top cover and look again.
