Scratched Rim

Today i was mounting a new Dunlop tire on a new 21" wheel & scratched the rim with my tire irons.My old wheel had plenty of scratches & rust on it,so i was never to worried about tire irons leaving their mark.I got some cheap rim protectors to use,but they really suck.Im trying to keep new wheel looking nice as long as possible.Im wondering if wrapping the tire irons in duct tape would protect the rim during future tire changes.Any ideas?

That's exactly what I do.  Duct tape works much better than the rim protectors I've been able to find lately.  Years ago rim protectors use to be softer.  No they seem to shatter first time you use them.
