I am thinking about changing my friction discs and steels this winter on my 06 dyna. I was looking the procedure over in the service manual and it says to remove the outer ring( I have a VPC unit on mine ) then remove the pressure plate then you can remove the friction discs and steels. I was under the impression that you had to use a arbor press to relieve pressure from the spring to get the circlip out to get to the discs. Am I misreading the service manual? It says that you only need a press if you are going to remove the clutch hub bearing. Any info would be appreciated.

Nope, no press needed unless you are popping out the bearing.  Pretty easy.  A lot easier than the damn makeshift tool needed to release pressure and reinstall the plate on the old sporty's clutch.

Thats great! Now next question what companies friction discs would you use? Keeping in mind that I am using the dreaded SE comp. so I would like to keep using formula+ as my primary lubricant. My bike makes 114 tq. and I am using a VPC 92t with the SE spring, I am thinking of installing the barnett heavy duty spring. Do the barnett friction discs work well with the formula+ ?

Why do you want to change them, is there something wrong, slipping, etc ???

The SE spring is 380 lbs.

There are conflicting reports on the Barnett Springs, according to Pat at Barnett, the Barnett P/N 502-00-01008 is + 20% heavier than the 99-04 era spring, 99-04 era being 320 lbs hence the 01008 = 384 lbs.  But then Mike at Barnett has recently told me their springs have laser-etched part numbers on them, they are made from two different thicknesses of high carbon spring steel, giving them their different spring rates.
#502-00-01004 is rated at 195 lbs (same as stock).
#502-00-01008 is rated at 310 lbs, approx. 35% stronger.

They cant both be right.  :emsad:

Take a look at the SE Kevlar clutch plates (37980-10). I am using them in my 06 Dyna / SE 120R with an SE spring and AIM VPC. Works like a champ.

Energy 1 Extra Disc either alone or with a VPC is another option.  Doesn't break the bank and will easily hold 114 TQ.
