So heres my issue that I am hoping a T-max tuning guru may be able to help squeeze a little more help for my hot starts before I can rectify the situation with some comp releases. If not I am positive my starter wont make an upcoming trip.

I have the stage 2 103 with 255 cams. High flow air cleaner, and vance and hines big shots staggered. All tuned with a Thundermax in an 07 softail. No comp realeases. 91 octane or higher used.
This thing pours out the heat when idling and has hot start issues (and I am cooler weather). Is there any possible way to help tune this out? I am stuck and am leaving on a trip with the bike in a week. New battery, timing on the map is low on start up. My cranking fuel is set at 8 and fuel pulse at 245%.
T-max support has been so-so and I am all out of ideas and in a bind. I am using map 720 or 721 (which ever one is not the 2-1 pipe map). The cranking and fuel pulse is all I have touched as per T-max support. They are a little slow on the draw and I am leaving on a trip soon that will tax the bike in hot weather. ANY help is appreciated. I DO NOT have easy access to a dyno unfortunatley. (and wouldnt trust there tunes regardless)

Is it kicking back or just not lighting off..

Not sure what softails use for starter cables but stock baggers suck..

It turnjs over a couple times then sounds like it stops for a split second and kicks back. usually get it on the second go around but it is defiantely not good for the starter.

I'd go for heavier cables.. If not try a newer battery if original seeing as how you are about to start a trip and it's possibly the easiest fix. You could try advancing the timing a couple down low should help it catch but it could backfire on you..

I looked at my old 103", 255 map, the timing was 17* in the idle / low MAP areas

Don't you mean.. "low TPS areas" For starting you need to look at low tps and RPM below idle.. The 720 map has 12 at 512, 17 @1280 which may OK .. but 0 and 256 only have 2 deg.. I run 8-9 deg at 0 and 256 on a 10.8 to 1 95 ci bagger.. Starts easy hot or cold without releases but does have travel limiters which I'm sure helps..

On hot days force of habit I always tap my starter button once.

No, I meant MAP. I had told him in a thread in the tuning section that I had run these cams with no starting issues. I had a SERT instead of the T-Max, however. The 17* were intended as a point of reference or comparison-

Max, would you suggest travel limiters on my 117"? I have a set sitting in my tool box.

If you have hot start issues,definitely.. You can also just back the pushrod off 1/2 to 1 turn from bottomed.

Not sure it's a good reference as the motor is most likely running when that number is used.. Might help a little tho. If the motor fires once and wheels have some momentum, a little more timing increases the chance of the fire lighting on the next compression stroke.
