Hello,

I am going to change my primary gearing. I originally thought going 24 comp with 37 basket, when I add up the dollars and cents it seems I could save a few bucks by using a 23 comp with the 36 basket and an 80 pitch chain. I know that the starter sees a little more resistance with this setup and my gearing is a touch lower than the 24/37 setup, but is there any other drawback to 23/36 80 pitch that I am not seeing?

Honestly, I don't thnk you really want to go any lower than 3.37:1 with a Big Twin. 23/36/32/70 would give you around 3.41:1 and that's starting to get low.

I'm not sure what you mean by an 80 pitch chain. Is that just one tooth shorter? The starter will work somewhat harder with a 23. It will still work but it will have a somewhat shorter life, IMHO.

The 24/37 is a very nice installation with standard parts and it comes with a new clutch bearing. I was very pleased at how easy it was. It was around $300. How much is a new chain?

Another thing, if the 23 tooth sprocket has a compensator, that would be fine. I wouldn't use a soid sprocket on a Twin cam engine..

Mi dos centavos.

What do you think of the screemin eagle kit. Includes 21 tooth sprocket & correct length chain. Uses you standard clutch basket gearing and is only a $110. at your harley dealer. tom

The 23/36 will give me about a 230-240 rpm increase in engine speed at 100 kph, that's what I'm looking for, no question about that. I am just wondering if the 23 T comp with stock basket (36) and chain that is two links shorter is as good a solution as the 24 comp with 37 basket and stock chain. It's less work and the parts from Baker are about $180.00 or so.
I think the 21 T comp will be waaay to low for me.

You only want to use this set up when you have a 6 speed with an 0.80 overdrive this will give youa 3.74 fifth and a 2.99 sixth. And the 1st gear in the 6 speed really needs to be a 2.94

Yeah I have one on the shelf my Bro gave me before he went to a 6 spd.  The Baker unit has a larger tensioner shoe.  If your bike is higher compression and needs releases for starts it is rough on starters.  Thats why a lot of the folks just do the basket and comp sprocket.  If you are not running a set of Yooper cables you might want to consider those.  I have 53k on my stock starter with a set of those cables.  The good quality cables make a difference! Contact Baker about the larger shoe.

Changing the clutch basket is really not difficult when you are in there. The nice thing about 24/37 is that it's all stock parts with the same primary chain. 21 teeth is completely off the scale. You wouldn't like it and you would eat starters. Uh-uh.

Thanks for the info guys. I am not running any compression, in fact it is a touch lower than stock with the HQ34's in there. I have been thinking about the cables, might do them anyway while the bike is apart.
