Why do you need to get the wheel off the ground?

You can install the emergency belt with both tires on the ground.

The instructions that FSG linked me to said loosen the rear axle and move the wheel forward then put the belt on. What am I missing? Of course if I was man enough to do like the pic in the post by truck I'd have it made.

Once the axle is loose, all you have to do is start to roll the bike backwards, hit the rear brake and the wheel will move forward enough to get the belt on.

How far can you ride on one of these emergency belts ? I ride across Europe most years ,usually a 2000 mile plus trip, a broken belt could hold me up for days, I'm thinking having one in the saddle bag would be a good idea.

Read reply #19 or 20 by roaddog for an idea.
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

And you're not supposed to exceed 50 MPH, if I remember correctly.

My belt broke once at ~50,000 miles. I was turning left from a 4 way stop hit 2nd gear hard, belt broke and somehow went under back tire which caused the back end to slide right and when the bike stood back up straight I shot off and broke my arm when I reconnected with mother earth. Bike went 20 yards or so and flopped over and skidded for a few feet. Just my luck I guess, sounds like most people break them sitting still.  :nix:  I had it towed, even if I would have had the emergency belt it wouldn't have mattered because my arm was broke and I probably couldn't have got it on anyway...

I broke one years ago on our '01 Ultra, this was one of the group of "bad belt" bikes that were built in late fall of 2000. I had 5 people locally with bikes built in that time frame, all of them broke belts early in the life of the bikes.

Mine broke 50 miles from home, I was screwin' off with a friend, took off from an intersection, grabbed for 2nd gear and it suddenly banged off the rev-limiter. :dgust:
"Hmmpf, missed a gear??"
Grab another gear and banged it off the rev limiter again?? :wtf:

Hmmm, somethin' ain't right?? Pulled over to the side of the road while playing with the shifter and the clutch trying to figure out what was up. :bike:

Only after pulling over and getting off the bike did I realize that the black snake laying back there on the road was my belt......... :emoGroan:
