Moderately cold-----------black jeans over real, silk longjohns over cotton briefs.
Cold-----------------------real, silk lined leather chaps over the above.
Extremely cold (15-20F)--as many sheets of newspaper as necessary, folded in half the long way, down the boot and between the chaps and the jeans.  It doesn't take much.

Basically the only extra bulk you're carrying is the chaps.  With newspaper you can be as warm as you want without the bulk.  You can also use it under your jacket.  Tear a "u" in the paper to get it up around your throat.  Another method is to put your ball cap, back folded into the front, brim down, up to your throat and under your jacket.  Works real well.

Insulated jeans with UA's works well. But in very cold weather I have found nothing that works better for me than black insulated Carhartt Bib overalls and light weight long Johns. Keeps the lower back warm and free from drafts that seep in under the jacket. Bicycle shorts help keep the boys warm and those foam knee pads for the knees under it all work well to if your out for a long winter ride. Used to wear them all the time when I rode Polar Bear throughout Pa. and NJ. Found if I'm not careful when winter riding with my back and knees they will not stop bothering me till sometime in June. :emsad:

I dont usually ride in the cold weather due to snow and ice and road salt but up till the snow falls if its cold enough I wear a 2 piece snowmobile suit .

I like the Carhart black insulated bibs also. They are super easy to get on and off with the bibs and have generous side zip leg openings to get over your boots and like RK101 said keep the draft from creeping up the lower back.

TKF Your not going to regret spending that money. :teeth: The reason I mentioned black is when the sun is out it attracks what ever heat is avalible from the suns rays. I have ridden in my old one piece Carhartt's a couple of times during Christmas toy runs before I got my Bibs.

Simmz I found that by keeping the draft off my back and kidneys I can ride much longer between pit stops.

Cool weather (40* to 50*) = deerskin gloves(I have heated grips)Hein Gehrick leather jacket, neck gator,  reg. jeans w/long johns.

Cold weather (20* to 39*) = Gerbing gloves and jacket liner, Underarmor Heatgear tops and bottoms, reg. jeans, chaps, neck gator, leather jacket w/liner, balaclava, fur traders cap w/ear flaps.

Really cold weather (below 20*) = all the above plus ThermaCare heated knee pads and chemicaly heated toe pads.

Don't really do long distance rides in the winter. The longest in time and distance is the Chicago Tots 4 Tots parade in December. Total time outdoors = 9 to 10 hours and 80+ miles.

I also do a brunch ride every Sunday if the roads are dry. 30 to 40 miles/1 hour each way.

YeeeHAW!

Both the Thinsulateâ,,¢ lined Wranglers and the Arctic Carhartt Bib overalls have arrived..............both garments EXCELLENT!

The Wranglers are roomy and plenty of room for long johns underneath if desired

I'd only take off a couple of points for the shoulder strap clips on the Carhartt's - I'd rather have the old loop-on-a-button instead of this new fangled "blade & loop"..............but I reckon I'll get used to it - the biggest challenge with the bibs will be getting them all the way on before breakin a sweat (snikker) EXCELLENT quality as I remembered - great idea RK!!!!!!!

I wear Carhartt bibs with fleece sweats underneath when I'm clearing snow with an open tractor and a few times on the bike in real cold weather. Plenty warm.

..... and I hate that damn "blade and loop" contraption too

Glad you like  them. I also wear insulated Jeans sometimes that I got on sale a Sports Authority when it's not to cold , but like  mentioned earlier when it's cold the insulated Carhartt bibs work the best for me as the draft on the back is just to much for me to enjoy riding.  Got to take care of this old beat up body as best I can. Ya know.

I ordered the Tourmaster Caliber riding pants. They are excellent if you don't mind wearing them when you get where you are going unless you bring jeans and change. For cold weather they are the best but for a big guy they can be too warm if the temps are above the 60s and you are walking around a lot. I think the overpants would work well also.(They make both) I also have the Tourmaster flex jacket to match and it is great. You can zip the pants to any of their jacket and they are just like a jumpsuit eliminating any draft. If the temp dips into the low 40s or worse I plug in my Gerbing liner. Of course a big advantage over my old Carharts is all of this is waterproof. Nothing worse than being cold and wet! You can get it all for the price of one Harley FXDRG item.
