so my old man wants me to replace his timing chain ten. while he is outta town next week. besides the primary gasket, derby gasket, and fluid is there anything else you think that i will need? its a fairly strait forward job right? the second question is do you think this would have been done during an oil pump job? the old man had his oil pump done less than 2k miles ago and i think that if they were worn they would have been  done at the same time right? thanks for the help guys, Nick

Are you talking primary chain or timing chain?  No need to primary gasget when doing timing tensioner.  confussed....
If you have to stop and think about if it is right or wrong, Assume it is wrong.

"Potty mouth", im sorry, primary. i gotta do a timing belt on my 3vze toyota this weekend and got that on my mind. sorry for the confussion

Well your still not very clear, the oil pump and primary tensioner are on opposite  sides of the engine, yet you talk about "them" as plural.......Think you are talking about the cam chain tensioners, if anyone was just there 2K ago they should(?) be fine......pop off the cam cover and it's a pretty easy inspection.......

the cam ten. were up graded to the hydro style when the oil pump / cam plate etc were done. we are definitely  talking bout the primary ten's. i just thought with 30k miles it might have been something to look at at the same time.

No way that chain should need replacing after 30K.  Got 167K on mine and haven't changed the primary chain yet.

nicadocius22

not the chain, just the tensioners. thanks

CAM chain tensioners or Primary chain tensioner? It's still not clear what you are asking.

Quotenot the chain, just the tensioners. thanks

Sorry I misread your post.  There is only one tensioner in the primary, and if it is the older, non automatic style you can replace just the shoe.  might be able to do that on the newer automatic one too.  Again, with 30K on it I would be surprised if it is worn much, unless it was run too tight.  Fairly straight forward job too.  Derby gasket is not needed for this, only primary.  And if you are real careful you might just get by reusing that one too, as the primary gasket tends to be kind of expensive.  I believe dyna models switched to the automatic tensioner in 06 and the other models followed in 07 or thereabouts.  Older non-automatic models will have a small inspection cover, and you can see the tensioner through that.

dont you need to remove the derby cover to refill the primary after? thanks for the help and sorry for the confusion

Yes, I guess you do.  I am used to filling mine through the inspection cover.

I have over 50,000 on my bike and the Primary tensioner still looks great.  im sure yours does too. always good to check ..   :chop:
