IT HAPPENED FINALLY ****BRAKE SWITCH RECALL*****

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a defect affecting motor vehicle safety exists on all 2009MY through 2011MY Touring, CVO Touring and Trike vehicles, and certain 2012MY Touring, CVO Touring and Trike vehicles, built June 6, 2008 through September 16, 2011. On these vehicles, the rear brake light switch, P/N 72016-06, when installed on 2009 or later Touring family motorcycles, may be exposed to temperatures which degrade its performance under certain riding conditions. This condition may affect brake lamp function and/or cause a brake fluid leak through the rear brake switch affecting rear brake performance. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0145) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to have the Dealers determine whether the motorcycle is covered by this recall and, if covered, they will replace the rear brake light switch using the recall kit, at no charge to the customer. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within five days. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to begin wave shipments on or before the week of October 24, 2011. Please reference the Service Bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.



In accordance with Federal regulations administered by NHTSA and other appropriate market specific government agencies, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. will provide notice to all owners of record of affected products with direction to bring the vehicle in for the recall service.

So, how does changing the switch solve the heat problem? Do they add a shield on the assembly?

Checked my '11 Road Glide, sure enough, brake light switch right beside where the cat converter would be if it still had stock exhaust.

Put the brake light switch right behind the hottest part of the exhaust and then wonder why it doesn't last??

Those who installed 09 and up under the frame exhaust on 08 and down models will want to pay attention to this...as the recall will not reach them...

Doesn't look like anything gets changed but the switch, the "kit" contains only the switch according to the procedure posted.

Like I said in the other thread, who puts a rather important electrical component right in the hottest spot on the bike??

Good question, Jeff, but I would wonder why they dealer would need to plug into the ECM just for a brake switch recall.

However, if the tech sees that a new catless header is installed, then they might question something, especially if the bike is still under warranty and they find a new header in place of the original one.

The one on the right is the updated one , we have replaced 6 so far today. cant tell the difference as far as appearance goes.

Per the service bulletin, the difference is clear. The bad switch has sharp peaks on the hex, the new switch has rounded peaks.

See, this is something I've never understood. I probably won't get the recall done till next spring now. If I do the mods I intend to over the winter, the bike won't run fer "Potty mouth" with the original cal installed, and I live 30 miles from the nearest dealer. So what am I supposed to do, install the original file in the parking lot before handing the bike over??

You plug all the tables into the nearest correct .mt7, have it identify itself as the stock calibration.

The ABS has its own data port.

Couldn't give a flip about warranty, technically that's been gone since the bike had about 300 miles on it.

I hear conflicting reports as to the dealer having to hook up to the ECM to bleed brakes?? Some say yes, others say no.
Is the rear brake light switch one of the ones with the valve behind it so it doesn't need bleeding when they replace it??
The service bulletin says they have to use the Digital Technician to bleed the brakes??
Can they do the brake bleed with a TTS MT8 file in the ECM??

More than likely, once the new switches are available I'll just order one and install it myself.

After 6 I'd say replacement isn't the answer. Hard tube relocation is the answer in my opinion.

I worry about them looking in seeing the ecm has been reflashed and then flagging the warranty.  I am not a sky is falling type guy but thinking that with all the financial crap going on with harley it would be a good way for them to void warranties.  I will just slap my stage 1 street legal sespt download in and not worry about it. mine is abs and I actaully like having a warranty even tho I have never had to use one LOL.

Took my 2012 Street Glide for the 5k service today and they installed the new switch whlie she was there.
