What brand have you guys had good luck with for inner primary's, engine cases, cylinders, heads? Any tried and true methods for prep and application?

Thumper Buttercup

Hey EG,

We did ours last year with the Harley stuff, looked as good as the new cylinders
we were putting on, just cleaned them up with Iso Alcohol real good and shot them.

We are reshooting ours again tomorrow with the new build just so everything looks
good again.   The paint held up good, but we only put on 4200 miles and one season.
04 Ultra, 95 Cu, 48N, Larry's Heads TTS

On an old shovel head I used the Harley  stuff also.. Eng, heat paint. Not sure what they called it. Held up good...

I did my engine with the Harley stuff, on my 1991 Sturgis back in '99 and it still looks great! Just remember to use a heat gun and / or somehow pre heat the metal just before you spray it. Works real good, lasts a long time.
Cheers, Flhfxd.

I use Harley or Bel Ray with an hot plate with an old sprocket for a base over the plate to set parts on works well.

I've always used the Harley wrinkle black paint for several bikes over 30 years.  Has always looked and lasted good.

After shooting I cure mine on the BBQ Grill for a few hours at 250 or so.  Don't know if it helps, but even the oldest work I have done (now over 10 yrs) still looks great, no flaking.  I know factory finishes that failed before that.

Rusty Steel

Most this stuff holds up real well if you CLEAN it real well first. clean clean clean. I use the stuff from Jireh Cycles, PJ1 Black wrinkle paint. Holds up real good, I even painted my frame with it and it still looks good after 4 years, I actually get a lot of comments on it. People look at it and ask if its truck bed liner stuff.
If it ain't broke... Fix it until it is.

I have a set of silver cylinders I'd like to paint black. Anyone tried the harley paint to do a color change instead of just a re fresh of the old color?

Wow, 20 bucks a can at the Harley dealer for the H-D brand. Right next to it was PJ1 at half the cost. Dealer says a lot of guys use it and it works just as well. Have seen Krylon and VHT also. I dunno, only want to do this once.
