I am in the process right now of installing a set of tw21 cams in my stocker 88/I have the new bearings and cams installed into the cam plate..my question is the andrews kit I have cam with both cams/both bearings but the rear bearing has a washer/shim with it? Is this for shimming the cam gear if required or is it a mandatory install somewhere? not quite sure and the instructions dont reeally say?..thanks

It goes on the rear cam before the inner race is installed.

Yup, what Billy said... note figure 1 on the andrews install instuctions.. You use your stock H-D spacer on the outside.

It might be an extra. Does it appear to be the same size as the one on the cam?

If memory serves me correctly, I do believe I had a "second" one left over 'cause when I got the cams andrews sends you the rear bearing kit with the washer as well; so you have two of the same size basically, but only use 1.

Look at fig 2 in Scurvy's link, it shows a second washer (spacer) if you are using Andrews outer sprocket. Don't need it if you're using the stock sprocket.

Ok....one other question...pretty simple....I know some folks are fairly liberal with their descriptions, but this discussion is specifically about the Andrews TW21 which would indeed be for a chain drive set up right?  That's what this is going into correct?

I am in the process of acquiring some gently used Andrews 21G's to work with my "gear drive" and am curious about any "shims" I might need.....which I should be aware of I would assume there is no such additional parts one must have to install, correct?

Shims are not required when using the geared style cams.  You must use 6004 c3 ball bearings for the outboard bearings on both cams.  Also be sure to replace inner bearings with Timken/Torrington B-148 needle bearings.  Be sure to check pinion to drive gear backlash.  Should be at least .001" and not more than .002".  Be sure that you check the pinion saft runout before install if over .003"  stay with chain drive.

Thanks for typing and explaining what you did above, I am currently running gear drive cams and have been for 4 years....I am simply in the process of changing to another "gear driven" cam....and yes indeed I plan to change the 6004 c3 ball bearings as well as the B-148 needle bearings....ummm this will be the 3rd set of bearings....lol....my bike will never wear out....I keep changing stuff too often.....HOPEFULLY this time I am building what I truly want....and won't be back in the cam chest for many years....sigh....

Thanks Overcamber for responding.....
