First, how long should it take to replace wheels?  Rear has tire, rotor and pulley.  Front has tire and rotors.  Quoted anywhere from 1 to 2-1/2 hours.

Second question:  Where is the sensor that turns off the cruise control when you hit the rear brake?  I'm sure it's worked before, mine seems to be sometimes right now.  Today, it didn't release the cruise.

First thing to check here is the rear brake light switch and relay, that's where the signal comes from to shut off the cruise.

Grumpy, 1-2 1/2 hours for replacing the wheels is a reasonable time. Second question has been answered.  :teeth:

Thanks for the responses.  As to the tires, I'm just going to change the rear for now, still miles left on the front.

tires or wheels  or both ? shouldn't take more than an hour to replace tire.

Local dealer charges 1 hr for front and 1 1/2 hours for rear of a bagger. I have watched them do the rear and do the front my self. I fell pretty sure they they are charging too much by about half an hour on the rear. In fact, I know that 12 years ago the going rate was only 1 hour for front or rear tires.

As for the cruise control: Did it release when you used the front brake? If so the rear switch is probably bad. Most of the ones I've seen fail do so and leave the brake light on. This disables the cruise control until the switch is either disconnected or replaced.

Jack744, tires are mounted on wheels with rotors and pulley.

bigfoot5x, yes the front brake releases the cruise.  Right now, the rear brake only does it sometimes.

Grumpy, are you saying the wheel is off the bike? if thats the case it should take about 15 minutes to mount and balance a tire.

Should only take an hour or less to do a front and rear wheel swap. (Remove old wheel, install new wheel)

I have changed both tires on my '05 Ultra, from on the bike, mount and balance, and back on the bike in just over one hour and I don't own all the fancy tools the dealership has. I was back in the service department once and watched them them pull in a bagger and mount and balance both tires in 40 minutes. Total time with paper work was less than one hour. With these powered tire changers it takes them maybe a minute to peal the old rubber off and slap on a new skin one they get to that part. I was quoted 1 hour per tire from the local dealership. When I told them it was out of line they told me to go ahead and do it myself, so I do!
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

runamuck

I usually pull my wheels and tires off then take to cycle gear for R&r of the tires. I have new commander 2's coming today and am thinking of removing and mounting them myself...from rolling the jack under the bike to having the front wheel of may be 15 minutes..the rear takes me 20 or 30 because of the other stuff to remove first..have never done the actual tire mounting before. will see how that goes. cycle gear charges 20 bucks including balancing..hard to beat that.

That is a good price.  I've been paying a local indy $25 to mount and balance tires for me.

My local Kawasaki dealer does mine for $25.00 each M&B,  the harley dealer wants $75 and the local indy wants $40.00

I get my tires from the Honda shop and they mount and balance for free if I bring them the wheel.

Nooter99

I took a brand new wheel with no rotor, no pulley and no tire on it to the local HD dealer. Asked them to just mount a new tire on it, didn't even want a balance (using dynabeads). They wanted $48!!!
Needless to say, I walked out. And they wonder why they have a bad reputation.  :nix:
