When I was stationed in England in 1962 I could have bought a Black Shadow for a little over $200. I bought a English Ford Consul instead. I did have a Sunbeam with a side car and it seemed I was always in a rain suit.

Local guy or was he actually on a road trip on that? That would be really cool if he was on an interstate trip. I like those bikes.

Sorry it's not an Egli Vincent, it's what appears to be a factory spec series C Black Shadow. Super bike of the 50s  and 60s.

I got to see him live when I went to a party with the Aintree MC about fifteen years ago in Surry.  If Thompson had a better agent, nobody would have ever heard of Eric Clapton.   HH

A quote about Phil Irving, the designer of the 998 Vincent engine, I wish I had known he lived in my town when he was still alive ! :

" Philip Irving devoted his life to his passion for motorcycles and motor racing and at age 89, weeks before his death in 1992, he was still tinkering with, and tuning, Harley Davidson motorcycles at 'Midwest Harley' in Ballarat, Australia. "

Wow that's a big call since Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds and they had a recording contract with EMI in 1964 when Thompson was only 15 and still at school.

And this quote from Thompson sums it up for me

When I started playing Fenders in 1968, it was unfashionable because everyone in England was playing Gibsons and trying to get a big, fat sound like Eric Clapton had in Cream. I just wanted a little more bite.
