I was told that Crane was bought out by S & S. At least their motorcycle division was. I don't know for sure but maybe do some research and if so, contact S & S. They have a great customer service. I would start looking to see what, if anything, may be causing the ignitions to fry. I ran a Crane Hi4E on my 96 Fatboy for years without a lick of problems.
Good Luck,

S&S owns Crane.
S&S also performs all the H-D re-mans.
S&S is a company WE are happy to do business with.
A lot of others out there, only wish they could tie S&S's bootlaces for them.

Check into Daytona Twin Tech. They do have a trade in program. My bud just did this the other day. He bought a Crane Ign for his TC, and found that he couldn't get the software or cable for it, (after he bought it). He contacted DTT & did the trade in program.

We just had an older HI-4, give us fits yesterday.
Installed a Dyna 2000i we stock, and the bike straighted right out.
Between the air/idle screw wadded into the S&S carb, the vacuum petcock, acting up, and the ignition being "Potty mouth"t, we were swimming upstream pretty good, to decipher all these issues simultaneously.

Glad S&S helped you out. I have found them to have excellant customer service. You should try working with Ultima-- easier to just get S&S parts to fix the damn things.

At the risk of ruining my whole damn day....

I've had a Dyna 2000i in my dual plugged single fire shovel since 04. Never an issue..... yet.
The module is in the cone and it can get pretty hot in there.

It's just not a kick start ignition, at least for me.  Maybe the newer models have a kick mode.

:agree: Went through 2 HI4's, Crane replaced them, but the problem persisted. When hot, would only run on 1 cyl, until it cooled down. Put the Dyna in, never a problem.

When I picked up my 94FXDL I had symptoms that one would blame the carby for, A Mikuni HSR42.

Backfire while cruising at 100 KPH
Miss and backfire around roundabouts
Often foul plugs when cold with no choke
Sometimes hard to start when hot and when it did spat a heap of black crap out the exhaust
Sometimes poor throttle response with hesitations
When normal riding idle would be fine but when stopping after stretching its legs on the highway it would idle upwards of 1500.

I changed jets, fuel pump settings, replaced plugs (often) and every time I touched the carby it ran well.

Then, one day riding home in the rain she stops, check everything and no spark so had to pay a "Potty mouth" load to get it taken home on a

pickup truck to find when I get home she fires straight up. OK so I have got water somewhere and the heat of the motor dried it out.

For the next 2 weeks ran fine except for the suspected carby issues and then, she stops again but a nice sunny warm day right at

my driveway. Push it inside and check for spark, yep got spark and she fires right up. OK so now i decide its not the carby at all so

I pull the cover off the nosecone, grab the misses hairdryer and put some warmth onto the HI4 module while its idling, after a couple

of minutes she stops, no spark.

Put a Ultima single fire in her and every little niggly issue it ever had was instantly gone.
After using S&S carbies and SU's for many years and cursing this Mikuni, after putting te Ultima ignition in my faith in the Mikuni

returned, damn they are a good carb...
