I was at the HOG Rally last weekend in Brainerd MN.  The rep for Cobra exhaust systems told a guy that the cats on H-Ds were located in the exhaust pipes and not in the mufflers.  Any truth to this?

Jeffd

they are on the 2010-2012 models.

I have seen this comment before and I am unconvinced that it is true for ALL HD models. My wife has a 2011 Super Glide Custom which now has a set of SE mufflers. Here is what I found: The O2 sensors are still up by the heads as compared to the 2012 Touring bikes that have O2 sensors down near the tranny. When I looked into the pipes while doing the swap, I saw nothing different as far up the tube as I could see. There is no external weld on the head pipe or anything else to indicate that something is in the pipe. The inlet on the stock mufflers has a honeycomb design unlike any muffler I have ever seen. They were also heavier than I expected the muffler to be. And lastly, the mufflers have an additional heat shield around them similar to the heat shields on the pipes. This heat shield is only on the front half of the muffler, where I saw the honeycomb. All this leads me to believe that on the 2011 Dyna's the cats are in the mufflers. Unfortunately, I have not bought a 2011 shop manual because we replaced a 2007 Lowrider with this bike. I figured the 2007 manual I had would be close enough with everything except this one issue. So if somebody has a 2011 shop manual that states the cats are in the pipes, copy and paste it on here so I can see for myself.

Yup, both my 2011 Dyna and the OL's Softail have catalytic converters in the Mufflers, not in the header pipes.

Thanks guys! I have been told here on HTT that I was wrong. I was beginning to think I was crazy and that my eyes deceived me.

Hogmike.  The guy the sales rep was talking to has a 2012 RK.  I wasn't there for the entire conversation.

For California HD baggers they moved to the head pipe in 2009

Truth is ,only the Touring bikes have the cats in the header pipes. Softails, and FX bikes are in the mufflers.
