What can I substitute for the sport trans fluid called for in my 1999 XL 883. Something I can buy at local Autozone or NAPA. Harley shop is 120 mile round trip.

A good grade of 20w50 synthetic oil could be used in the Sporty transmission, and for the clutch. I don't think any 20w50 has friction modifiers, or the energy conservation seal, but make sure it doesn't, as it may not agree with the clutch.

MOBIL 1    10-40   MTX  ( or some other 3 letter combo)

Valvoline VR1 20W50   motor oil

Any 75-90 gear oil that is suitable for use with wet clutches or limited slip differentials....it'll say that on the bottle...

Wicked

75W90 is too thick for a sporty trans. If none of the specific brands are available, any non-synthetic 20w50 motor oil will do.

Is there any other bike shop around you?  Even a metric bike shop could order you some sport trans fluid from Parts unlimited or Tucker Rocky.  Both have good products and is priced good.

Or, if you really want the "genuine(tm) article," make the 120 mile round trip and come back with six quarts of the "Formula+" stuff. At a pint and a half per change and a 5000-mile change interval, that's 40K miles worth of fluid, and six quarts will easily fit in a saddlebag...

When in doubt, ride yer motorcycle!  :chop:

In Sporty's and Buells I always used Red Line Lightweight Shockproof gear oil. These guys will shiip to your door.        http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/category/Red_Line_Shockproof_Gear_Oil2

Pint and a half? I just dumped a quart of M1 V-Twin 20-50 in it. My book says 32 oz. :scoot:

75w-90 gear oil and 10w-40 engine oil are the same viscosity.......

The M1 20w-50 will work...but I think engine oil is for engines and gear oil is for gear boxes JMHO...if there are clutch packs sharing the same oil as the tranny, the gear oil should have the limited slip additive pack in it
