Take the bike to a tuner or install a programmer?

 Ive got a '12 Heritage with a 103 with aprox 8800 miles on the clock. So far I have added the SE A/C with the stage I download along with a set of SE-255 cams installed straight up with stock push rods. A set of Rush long seiries pipes with the 1.75 baffles installed. These are similar to the old V&H long shots. The bike runs great but in know there's potential left untapped with the stock tune. Am I better off purchasing a programmer, like a Power commander or SE ,or Thundermax or such or would I be better off having a shop  tune the bike? I live in the Phoenix,AZ area so I know there's going to be a few good shops to choose  from if I go that
route. I'm sure either route will cost me,just don't want to waste my money. After the tune I'll sure I'll leave the bike alone for a  while. let me know what you guys think and if you have any experience with having a tune done in the Phoenix area.

Not trying to split hairs here, but you no longer have the "stock tune" if you have a stage 1 download. The operating parameters have been modified, albeit with a "canned map". Is there more left in it? Most likely, but may or may not be enough to justify messing with it.

Now to your question (should you decide to try for more), it all depends on your knowledge and/or ability to learn and understand the nuances and adjustability of whichever tuning aid you decide to go with. And whether or not you really want to dick with it.

Another direction you could go is 2 hours North. There is a very good independent shop/dyno tuner in Prescott, AZ. Name of the shop is GMR Performance. They are very knowledgeable in all phases of Harley tuning and can help you make the decision, even if you decide to go at it yourself. They could sell you a good tuning device and either tune it for you or give you pointers on doing it yourself.

Just my opinion but.......with those pipes you need a good tuner to re map it....stage 1 is not even close for 255s ...and unless your comfortable tweaking with a TTS or SESPT you are better off getting a Pro Tuner with a Dyno to tweak it... 

A TMAX would work good....but for that kind of $$ you can get a damn fine Dyno tune on a SESPT or TTS.. ( Depending on what unit the Dyno guy likes )

It is not really an either or decision. The dyno shop will need some type of tuning device to tune the bike anyway. Find a good dyno shop and talk to them to help you pick a tuning device. If you like to try things on your own buy the device and give it a try you can always go to the dyno for the final touches if you do not feel you got it all.

If your looking to just plug and play and not worry about learning or carrying a lap top. Get the Precision by RevPerf. Even if you go bigger in the future it is ok. Setup is simple turn the key wait for the O2 to heat up,  start,  let it idle for a minute. Then just ride.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give a couple of shops a call, including GMR and see what they suggest. I'll do my research on the different tuners on the market. I've seen alot of different models mentioned on this forum.

I have no personal experience with GMR, but from what I've read here and other places, they're pretty good.

The Revperf unit will only work with older style (pre-2010) O2's, so its not an option.

As mentioned here, buy the tuner AND have it tuned.  You can get close with a TTS or SEPST, but it will take a little time in the saddle to get it there.  If you want it right now, buy the tuner your shop uses and have them tune it, and go ride!

Even the canned HD downloads run too lean, so if you invest in the tuner you will at a minimum get a cooler running bike, over what you have now.  I expect the professional tuning your bike will get some extra oomph from your setup, as well.

Have it dyno tuned. Canned maps always fall short of the motor's potential.

Not sure but i wonder if the 5000 foot elevation would effect the wot tuning as can't tune at 100 kpa? Not sure of it would make a difference.  I know at 3300 feet im only maxing about 90 kpa.

Well, you could be right there, as it's about 1,100 feat at the airport in Phoenix, big swing in elevation. Only reason I know, I used to live there.

Go see Nick Trask at Trask Performance. He is right across from Deer Valley Airport.
He is the best tuner in the valley.  You will have to wait a few weeks though as he just left for  Sturgis today. I'm sure the shop is still open.

I attempted to use the smart tune software with my SE tuner (SEPST) but was not happy with the results and bike seemed to run too hot no matter how much I tweeked it.

Finally took it to a reputable tuner in my area called Jarz Performance in Abbotsford.

Dyno tune ran me $500 bucks. Not cheap but these guys know what they are doing and bike runs perfect now. I consider it money well spent.

Doc's Performance Tuning in Minneola, FL is $425.00 for a new map with the TTS system. The TTS has an advantage in that you can review from hundreds of approved maps and pick one that is very close or identical to your build. If you do not fear the laptop, you can then tighten your map up doing V-Tune Runs. It is an amazing program. BTW, Doc was/is one of the Beta testers for the TTS Master Tune program

If you had an H-D shop install the cams, are you sure you don't have a "stage two" download?  If not, you should have.

The cams were installed at home,not a dealership,so no tuning or downloads were done yet. I called 3 dealerships today and all say that there is no stage 2 download, that they would need to sell me a tuner and do the dyno tuning session. Sounds like I'll be doing that in the near future. Not sure that I'll go to the dealership,plenty of good shops here in Phoenix to choose from.
