Mr. Fatty

While waiting for the new one to come, is there a way to have the rear brake operate the rear brake light so I can still ride? The light is always on even with the front switch removed.

FSG

The front and rear brake lifgt switches are wired in parallel so that operation of either lever will operate the brake light relay.  Your brake light shouldn't be on and if the front switch is removed and the wires isolated be checking further.

Mr. Fatty

Where to check further?  The boot was torn, I pulled 1 of the rear wires to check to be sure it was the front and the light stayed on. I pulled the front switch out hoping to ride but the light stays on.

It's possible to have a sticky brake light relay, pull it to ensure the light goes out, replace it with another to check it's not sticky/stuck contact.

What year model is this problem on?

Mr. Fatty

When you say brake light relay, are you talking about the switch with the plunger in the r side handlebar assembly? If so, I all ready cut this out. I pulled the wires off the rear and the brake light went out and the licence plate light stayed on, then I touched the 2 wires I cut and the brake light goes on. Kind of hard to drive that way :hyst:

FSG

some bikes have brake light relays, some don't, tell me what model/year you have

the boot on my front brake switch is torn but I don't worry about it

sounds like you have a bad rear bake light switch

Mr. Fatty

FSG

Both broke, possible but not likely.

If you don't have the SM oe EDM with the wiring diagrams you will find them here in the Documents Section.

The 09 Fat Bob doesn't have a relay, the paralleled output of the switches goes directly to the rear brake light.

This doesn't be chance have any aftermarket turn sig/ brake light/ converter stuff on it does it?
Got a case of dynamite, I could hold out here all night

Mr. Fatty

Nope.
Turns out the front actually worked even though torn and the back went out. Should have pulled both the wires off the rear to test not just 1.  Now I need both.
