He bought himself a CanAm Delux.
Now, he said he has a 5 galllon tank on the 'sissy bike' and claims the thing sucks up gas.
He filled the tank (so he says)  and went 50 miles, that 10 miles to the gallon, then he needed more fuel.   ouch!!
Is he right on the assumption or is he figuring things wrong?
Anybody want to admit to having a CanAm (I won't tell....honest) or a friend that has one and reported their pros & cons on the 'sissy bike'?  :scoot:

he either  has a leak or needs to back to math class , I talked to two guys who ride them & both say 40-45 mpg packing double

Polaris doesn't get much better fuel mileage

It should be pumping black smoke at 10mpg, I doubt it was filled. If he went by his gas gauge (do they have one?) that might be his first mistake.

I was looking at getting one but the feedback about mileage stopped me dead. That and the maintenance costs. Seems you have to visit the dealer for everything. Average mpg was low 20's. All this on a 990 cc rotex engine. Got twice that on a 1450 tc. NO Thanks.

Rotax engines are notorious for bad gas mileage, they belong in a snow mobile

With a 100-ish HP 1000cc engine, in a bike that weighs as much or more than our favorites, and only 30mpg or less the emissions have to be crap, water cooled or not.
How does they Can-Am get away with spewing fumes and the MoCo can't??

Actually, from the EPA certification papers posted a couple weeks ago, the MoCo is managing numbers WELL below that EPA specs, not sure why they insist on delivering crappy running bikes when they don't have to.

He said he needed fuel after 50 miles.  Well, of course he needed fuel--he used some.  Or, did he say he had to refill the tank and it took 5 gallons?  There isa difference from needing fuel, versus needing to fill the tank from empty.

Was he more accurate in what he meant?  Cant see it using 5 gals over 50 miles.  Story dont smell right to me.

Yup, me to Dennis..............bad smell.

I bet he filled the tank, and refilled the tank when the fuel light came on (4 gals used?).  That would make it 12.5 mpg, an increase of 25% over the 10 mpg he thought he was getting.  :hyst:

I talked to him yesterday ( keep in mind this is his first bike...a sissy bike so they say)  and he said that he thought the tank was full from the dealer.
And he admits that the gas gage is off.  :-\

No.......I had nothing to do with his buying a CanAm.   :scoot:

They reserve the additional room they gave for EPA to have dealer installed EPA upgrades. If they sold it to you with the bike, they couldn't make money on after sales upgrades.

I know some people get into the Can Am looks but I just can't. As for mileage, let him ride it for a while and see what the mpg averages out to. Maybe even let us know. Just out of curiosity. I had no idea they were reporting low mpg.

Kleetus

If you look at the Aprilia Bikes they use Rotax engines and they consistently burn more fuel than other brands of bikes with the same size engines. I think it's how the engines are tuned. The engines are known to be very reliable but thirsty.

tomcat64

the local dealer told me that the spyders average about 25mpg...

tdkkart

Per this, looks like 28-30 is a pretty good average:

Interestingly, the Can-Am Spyder has about the most reporting bikes(111) of any other bike in their lists.
Even Gold Wings only had 52.

Are you asking the question..? "My bro-in-law bought a new bike?" The answer is NO.. a Can- Am is not a motorcycle... neither is trike, but a Can-Am even less so... I'll allow a trike to ride (in the back, behind everyone else), I won't allow a Can-Am to ride, go find another summer snow mobile rider for those things... they are for people who can't ride, don't know how to ride, or don't have the balls to ride a Motorcycle... yes they are for sissys.. sorry, but that's my attitude towards them.

Inda Win

I guess that's the meaning of "myway or the highway".

Question regarding those Can-Am things, what are they classified as anyway?  I hope it's not MC.. though I do know you can get a MC license now by taking your road test on one of those things, which is really crazy.  There should be a seperate catagory for these open air 3 wheel vehicles other than MC.  :nix: :crook: :crash:

You won't "allow" a trike or a Can Am to ride??
WTF is up with that??
So if a Can Am approaches your group from any direction you'll stop them and say "Sorry, you're not "allowed" to ride here."

Wow...........

LOL!  Maybe... first off I don't ride in groups because I don't like group rides, it's the speed up, slow down affect that drives me crazy.  Been there done it, as Director, Pres., you name it, not going back...I have a couple friends who I'll ride with from time to time with our 'ol ladies on the weeknend, otherwise, I ride alone, like it better that way, I'm experienced, ride hard, fast, slow down now and then to check out the scenery, whatever.  I can ride easier than I can walk I've bene doing it so long. Like my handle states, I like riding "myway" ... now to your question, I have to seriously think about it, because my intial response was tounge in cheek, I have a cutting sense of humor, those who know me in real life, obviously not here on the Internet, one wouldn't be able to know that right away.  To answer, no I wouldn't necessarily tell some one to "F" off if they asked to tag along, but I wouldn't invite them either.  I don't consider those things motorcycles so why would I want them around me, that is unless they're being driven by some cutie..  :teeth:   I've seen guys riding with their wives or GF's because they don't want them on the back of their bikes, or the GF or wifey wants to ride her own, and they're riding like old ladies... waiting for their spouses... speeding up, laying back, ey yi yi... I rather put some 100lb cute on the back who I forget is even back there and enjoy riding the way I want....which is what I usually do anyway.  :chop:

My cousin has the touring model. We ride together on trips and yes it eats gas 30-35 mpg 2 up. The Spyder runs and handles good. He likes it so that's all that matters. The only thing he gripes about is the Dealer. He says they aren't trained enough to work on them. :idunno:

Even the sissies minus an arm(s) and/or a leg(s), who, for whatever reason, are not capable of riding a two-wheeled product? I don't know about anyone else in here, but I'm getting a warm fuzzy feeling who the real sissy is, and it's not those kinds of riders who lack the balls.

Given the number of wars America has been involved in for the past decade, I'd say a trike or a Can-Am would be a good product for some of those veterans who wish to continue to ride, or learn to ride, a motorcycle. And yes, contrary to the opinions of some, such vehicles are classified as motorcycles.
